It indicates that too many people here are okay with undemocratic seizures of power, as long as someone they like (in this case Hugo Chavez) is doing it. In essence, the Chavez government wants to get rid of the elected government of Caracas and take over those responsibilities.

Tell me guys: how is this any different from Margaret Thatcher abolishing the Greater London Council in 1986 when it was being led by the hard-core socialist Ken Livingstone? How many people here support Chavez grabbing control of Caracas while denouncing Thatcher's abolishing of the GLC as autocratic? In both cases, the national legislature approved of the plan, but in Britain's case there was serious opposition from within the Conservative party. In Venezuela's case there is no opposition, since everyone is expected to toe the party line.

What's most ironic is that all those years later Ken Livingstone continues to advise the Chavez government on urban affairs when it is doing exactly what happened to him way back then.

We should not be tolerating or apologizing for those undemocratic seizures of local government, regardless who is doing it.

in the first quarter of this year when everyone else was tanking. Screw the reduction of poverty there by 50% since 2002 and extreme poverty by 75%.

Screw the renewed effort to bring corruption to trial and the drug busts that have doubled since he booted the dirty DEA from Venezuela.

Screw all of that and go with your phony "excellent" point about a democracy more vigorous than ours, where the citizenry isn't spied upon, where the elections are cleaner and monitored every time and where the people have food, housing and medical security.
