NYT's Dowd Admits Plagiarizing Blog
(AP) New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd has admitted to using a paragraph virtually word-for-word from a prominent liberal blogger without attribution.

Dowd acknowledged the error in an e-mail to the Huffington Post on Sunday, the Web site reported. The Times corrected her column online to give proper credit for the material to Talking Points Memo editor Josh Marshall.

The newspaper is expected to issue a formal correction Monday. A request for comment made by The Associated Press was not immediately returned by the Times late Sunday.

The error appeared in Dowd's Sunday column, in which she criticized the Bush administration's use of interrogation methods in the run-up to the Iraq war.

6. they steal all the time and then wonder why newspapers are losing ground
Years ago, during the Chandra Levy case, I wrote a fairly long post about how Chandra Levy's family had an influence on how she behaved during her relationship with Gary Condit.

Two days later much of my post appeared in the Washington Post.

Anyway, thank you so very much, Maureen Dowd, for showing my students that plagiarism goes on at the top. This will be a great example for why they shouldn't do it. :sarcasm:

10. Another lame attempt at humor gone awry.
Yup, there's been plenty of plagiarism, and more than a few fabricated stories, in the Times.

9. Actually she doesn't admit plagiarizing TPM, she says "a friend" gave her the line and she used it.
Says she didn't read it in TPM, didn't know the idea/line was from TPM. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/17/maureen-dowd-admits-inadv_n_204418.html

I'm wondering if she has an assistant or "friend" who writes drafts of her column and that's how the unattributed line got in. Not unknown for some authors who have research assistants who draft things out and then the "author" does the final. Seems a more likely explanation than the one she gave but one she wouldn't admit either.
