WEST HAVEN, Utah – The principal of a Utah middle school has been asked to apologize for forcing a kilt-wearing student to change his clothes.

Weber School District spokesman Nate Taggart says Craig Jessop has been asked to extend an apology to 14-year-old student Gavin McFarland of Hooper after the school official's comments Wednesday.

Gavin says he wore the kilt twice in the past two weeks to Rocky Mountain Junior High as a prop for an art project. Jessop told the boy that the outfit could be misconstrued as cross-dressing.

Taggart says the district recognizes the kilt as an expression of the boy's Scottish heritage and that the kilt was not inappropriate.

My mom just returned my call and she knows alot about Scottish history. I asked her if both sexes wore the kilts and she said 'no, just the men' then I asked what did the women wear and she said 'same design but they wore longer dresses down to the ankle.'

edit to add: The most unusual cross dresser I ever met: A straight welder. Big burly guy, but he had great legs in a mini skirt. :) He too could kick that misguided pricipal's ass.

The Highland Games used to be down the road from us - on those days I didn't try to go into town since there would be cars parked down both sides of our country road for miles. The Games just got too big for the farm that was hosting them, so they are now at the regional fairgrounds in town.

I watched a man in kilt and regalia playing the bagpipes to the sea one time. Some of ritual song, maybe a rare low tide? Early morning, not many people on the beach, he's standing, facing the sound, playing this haunting melody. Stunning. In my collection of beautiful and surreal experiences.

students with Pacific Islands' heritage...every once in awhile one or more of the guys
