Utah school forced student to change out of kilt: "could be misconstrued as cross-dressing"
Hoot, mon.

====

WEST HAVEN, Utah – The principal of a Utah middle school has been asked to apologize for forcing a kilt-wearing student to change his clothes.

Weber School District spokesman Nate Taggart says Craig Jessop has been asked to extend an apology to 14-year-old student Gavin McFarland of Hooper after the school official's comments Wednesday.

Gavin says he wore the kilt twice in the past two weeks to Rocky Mountain Junior High as a prop for an art project. Jessop told the boy that the outfit could be misconstrued as cross-dressing.

Taggart says the district recognizes the kilt as an expression of the boy's Scottish heritage and that the kilt was not inappropriate.

5. Absolutely not
And you'll find that the same people who would rip out their own hair in outrage if that ever occurred, will be the first here to defend the school.

3. A Taggart should know better
considering that it's a Scottish surname. I'll bet all his forebears will form a line on the day he dies and take turns kicking his ass. Cross-dressing, indeed!

11. Reading comprehension slips away sometimes
Jessop can be a Scottish surname too, so please make the necessary substitutions :silly:

12. Alot of "Jessops" are members of th FLDS
Which I found an interesting fact!

The Principal at my nephew's HS in OK who okayed his weekly kilt wearing was named "Griffith." Methinks she also approved of young men wearing kilts!

Thank goodness this principal has no more pressing issue than "clarifying" gender roles in his school!

6. This happens several times a year in the US -- a kilt is a MAN'S garment
And, even though I'm gay, I LOVE a man in a kilt! All men look good in them. My nephew used to wear his to school every Friday, and that was in Freeper Military Town Oklahoma.

I remember some high school a few years ago barring a boy in full formal dress kilt kit from his prom.

I think it's significant the Board Prez's name is "Taggart"!

31. Maybe it is
But back in the 16th century of Scotland the kilts were worn by both sexes members of a clan.

39. Sorry
My mom just returned my call and she knows alot about Scottish history. I asked her if both sexes wore the kilts and she said 'no, just the men' then I asked what did the women wear and she said 'same design but they wore longer dresses down to the ankle.'

Edited on Sun May-17-09 07:32 PM by juno jones
Especially amongst the SCA/Rennie/ScottishGames crowd.

I dare that principal to accuse them of 'crossdressing' or 'skirt' wearing. Some of these guys fight in full armor and some toss huge chunks of wood for fun.

edit to add: The most unusual cross dresser I ever met: A straight welder. Big burly guy, but he had great legs in a mini skirt. :) He too could kick that misguided pricipal's ass.

35. No, I don't do 'events' since I quit SCA and since my knees went bad
The Highland Games used to be down the road from us - on those days I didn't try to go into town since there would be cars parked down both sides of our country road for miles. The Games just got too big for the farm that was hosting them, so they are now at the regional fairgrounds in town.

And who really cares if he *was* cross-dressing? Those codes are pure nonsense.

Was what needs to be covered, covered? Fine then.

Besides, I think men look great in kilts!

30. What a creepy dumbass
Sees a kid in a kilt and thinks crossdresser? Weird.

I watched a man in kilt and regalia playing the bagpipes to the sea one time. Some of ritual song, maybe a rare low tide? Early morning, not many people on the beach, he's standing, facing the sound, playing this haunting melody. Stunning. In my collection of beautiful and surreal experiences.

32. I think Sean Connery should get together with Dario Franchitti
Scott Galloway and Mike Myers and other celebs who participated in the “Dressed to Kilt” and have a talk with the principal.

Proceeds from the "Dressed to Kilt" were donated to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Wounded Warriors organization and the Erskine Hospital in Scotland.
