US soldier fights Taliban wearing pink shorts
Source: Telegraph.co.uk

Zachary Boyd, 19, was asleep when enemy fighters attacked his base in the Korengal Valley in Kunar province.

He had enough time to put on is helmet and body armour but had to dispense with his uniform before joining his comrades in manning their bunker.

Unfortunately, the resulting unorthodox approach to battle camouflage – pink "I love NY" underwear and a bright red T-shirt – was captured by an Associated Press photographer.

Army Specialist Boyd phoned home to warn his family in Texas that the photo was about to appear on the front page of the New York Times.

of our service members ever! I love it and am so forwarding this to my brother (who was over there not long ago).

He should be commended too; he jumped into action with only his jammies still on. :patriot:

14. Lighten up Francis!
Who cares if he's in his underwear? I don't think he's a sissy, if he's fighting in the Middle East. He might be wrong for being there (I hate war and don't trust the justifications for it) but I don't think he's a coward.

And what's with putting "women" in quotes? What are you, Super Butch?

60-year-old was killed yesterday. You're not too old to show how non-girly YOU are. Join up and always make sure you're in proper uniform when you're being shot at, even if you're asleep. What a dumb-ass comment. Worst dumb-ass comment I've ever seen on the board.

Edited on Sat May-16-09 06:41 AM by LaurenG
Do you know what it's like to be woken by an alarm that tells your mind you're about to die. My husband served in the first gulf war and night after night there were sirens going off warning of an impending chemical attack. Most of the soldiers barely got their gas masks on in the time it takes to die from chemical poisoning much less get their pants and shoes on. Oh and in war, "sissies" is not a word anyone should use to describe a soldier.

on second edit:
Oh and maybe we should talk about the real sissies - those republican men who hide behind a woman - you know let the woman take the fall for their evil decisions on war, torture and lies. You certainly don't have the same priorities in mind as I do!

edit: typo

44. um, to become his commanding officer
you first have to get off your sorry fat cowardly arse and enlist. Then make your way up the ranks, and forward to the front lines. Then and only then you are allowed to call any brave soldier a "sissy."

21. My first thought when I saw the shorts was he made the mistake
of washing that red shirt and those normally white boxers (I live in NY and have only seen those boxers in white) in the same wash. My DH occasionally ends up with and wear pink underwear for that reason... I've always thought of it as a fairly common mistake (heck I did it years ago) and it's not like this guy can go out to the Mall and easily buy new.

I'll bet he's going to get a lot of ribbing over this picture... I just hope he makes it home okay so he can share this story with his children and grandchildren someday.

Nothing truer was ever said! Spot on.

And I don't think he'll have anything to explain, he did good in getting out there so fast. If anything, he'll probably get a talking to from his mum about washing red with white clothing!

NBC News went to his parents house. His father said that he cracked up laughing when he saw his son, who seems to prefer boxer shorts.

Zachary had a scholarship, but chose to go in the military.

These guys are fighting the Taleban, who hate women and LGBTs and consider kite flying to be anti-Islamic.

37. If you read the rest of the story, he talks to his mom.. The mom tells
the paper further when he found out his heart panties would be in the NY Times:

"He said: 'I hear the Times is what they put on the president's desk'," she said.

"Then he told us: 'I may not have a job anymore after the president has seen me out of uniform'."

http://media.star-telegram.com.nyud.net:8080/smedia/2009/05/14/09/99-zachary-boyd.standalone.prod_affiliate.58.jpg

His mother was surprised to see that her son was in the Times, but she was not surprised that he was wearing unusual skivvies.

"It was typical," she said. "He has always been an interesting little character."

Sheree Boyd recalled her annoyance at how her "Zacho" used to "sag" his oversized jeans to reveal the tops of his boxers.

"I was always telling him to pull up his pants," she said, chuckling. "I would give him a wedgie to make him do it. As a mom, you want your son to look nice.

"But he has always been one to run around in his boxers. He even went and played golf one time in his boxers."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the shirt.

Presumably, there is an enemy out there trying to kill you. If that's the case it's not very cute to stand next to your buddies wearing a bright red shirt.
