How about a DU fiction contest? I'll start with the outline of a plot to develop .......
A US president wins the White House in a silent coup. He is the son of a former president, but, in and of himself, is lazy and uninterested in the job. he just wants to play video games and upstage his Father.

He has a vice president who is actually interested in running the show. So they come to a quick agreement. the boy will be the figurehead. The old man will run shit and tell the boy what to say and do. In exchange, the boy never has to trouble himself with actual sentient thinking.

The old man decides we need a war. he fires up the kid, who gets behind the idea. The kids sees it as a way to outdo his father. the old man has a whole bunch of twisted views as to why we need to do it.

Meanwhile, a crew of stupid young religious zealots - no better or worse than any religious zealots following any religion in history - including today's American 'christian' movement - follow the orders of their handlers and fly airplanes in a building and start a conflagration - literally and figuratively.

The old man sees the opportunity and seizes it. the kid gets to play hero and dress up in cool pseudo-military costumes. Kinda like playing cowboy when he was a younger kid. And he gets candy when he does a good job.

The old man rounds up a bunch of other religious extremists and tosses them into a quickly built prison at a US military base far from public scrutiny, on a tip of land on an otherwise hostile island-nation in a nearby tropical sea.

For reasons that, to this day, are largely unfathomable, instead of simply making shit up and telling it to The People, the old man develops a story line and then tortures the captive religious zealots to force them to say what he wants them to say. (Were there videotapes of them saying it?). They know they're committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. So well do they know it that they get some loser lawyers to concoct a whole rap as to why they can do what they're doing.

Then - and here's the really brilliant part - they anticipate that everything turns to shit and they could be prosecuted anyhow, so they concoct a whole series of subterfuges whereby the leadership of the opposite political party - kept in place to provide the illusion of an actual, functioning democracy - are briefed with half facts and half truths and outright lies and with no record and with conflicting statements and with conflicting briefings to various different party members and done in so twisted a way that, by whistling certain tunes in certain secret sequences and by saying certain things at certain times to certain media types on certain media outlets, create the impression that the opposition party were in the know and participated in the decision to use the torture, or at worse knew about it and chose to allow it rather than oppose it.

"Yeah, we tortured. So what? See, they knew, too, and they were okay with it."

The water gets muddier and muddier. The public gets confusder and confusder.

And then the public says "Ah, fuck it."

And they get away with it.

The contest is to flesh out this outrageous outline of a plot. I mean, this could never ever happen in real life, right?

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****

And we stand there and allow them to do it, preferring, instead of staying on the actual case, to turn on our OWN leaders and call them equally complicit. They know this and they use this against us and it works ...... EVERY ..... FUCKING ...... TIME.

1. Unlike real life, fiction has to be believable. nt
