Richard Gere called Diane Sawyer out this morning
He was on her talk show to promote his new film about Clifford Irving. He tried to draw comparisons to the time of the events in the film (1971) and the present day, saying we had a president who lied, problems with the cabinet...Diane tried to change the subject, but Gere persisted, saying, we have a war that was based on a lie, just like we did then with Viet Nam. Diane refused to respond; Gere said, "You're not going there with me, are you?" Diane: "No." Gere: "Why not?" He remained friendly and pleasant (after all, he was there to promote a movie), but at least he tried. I admire that.

1. Good for him.
The world is finally waking up though. Hopefully the Diane Sawyers of the media will wake up as well.

14. The world may be waking up but
the US corporatemediawhorepress will never wake up until we indict them at the Hague with the bush regime.

I'm wondering if Storming the Networks would have any effect?

19. Sawyer's fat paycheck depends on not seeing the lies
So you can be very sure that she won't see any lies anywhere whatsoever, as long as the person or corporation issuing those big, fat paychecks to her tell her that there haven't been any lies.

than all the Rosie braying that seems "heroic" to some and a publicity stunt to others.

9. Preaching to the choir, Rosie is!
I don't care about anyone lecturing me through the TV screen like Rosie and Elizabeth H., they're simply preaching to their choirs. Now Richard Gere, OTOH, is exposing a truth as well as any good journalist would and should! Way to go!

12. Why bring Rosie into this ?
Seems like a personal problem.

And by the way, the folks in the heartland see RG as a complete crackpot. The way they see it - he goes around with that little man who wraps himself in a towel and shaves his head.

Also, he is not a big favorite of some in the northeast either - remember when he was booooed and heckled by the firemen and police officers that responded and worked at the World Trade Centers?

20. What Was that about Richard
Gere being booed at the 9/11 concert? hillary was booed, too.

I agree with you about Rosie..I think anytime our message can get out on corporate tv is great.

My thought on the booing is that the firemen and police were confused about who their friends were and were just booing liberals. Anybody have anything else?

The firemen have since realized that ghouliani was their enemy.

30. He was booed because he started a sort of
"Can't we all just get along..." speech. He was suggesting tolerance of other faiths, etc. He picked the wrong audience or perhaps the wrong time. Maybe now they would listen and boo neither RG or Senator Clinton.

28. Lots of men in the heartland shave their heads these days.
I live in the deep south and I don't think Gere is a crackpot.

Try not to let regional chauvinism influence your thinking.

you may not agree with her, but she's raising important questions and standing by her guns. we need MORE of this in the media, not less.

8. She worked with Nixon's Press Secretary
After finishing her education, Sawyer served as a local TV news reporter for WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky until 1970, when she was hired by White House press secretary Ron Ziegler to serve in the administration of President Richard Nixon, staying on through his resignation in 1974, and working on the transition team between Nixon and Gerald Ford in 1975, and assisting Nixon with his memoirs. Years later, Sawyer would be suspected as the source of leaks of classified information to Bob Woodward (nicknamed "Deep Throat" by Woodward) during the Watergate scandal. However, she was one of six people to request and receive a public denial from Bob Woodward

Nixon Too Boozed For War

PRESIDENT Richard M. Nixon was so drunk one night after the Yom Kippur War broke out in 1973 that his secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, wouldn't allow him to take a call from the British prime minister. The story is told in 20,000 pages of telephone transcripts and nearly 1 million pages of national security records gone over for the last four years by historian Robert Dallek, whose new book, "Nixon and Kissinger: Partners in Power," is excerpted in Vanity Fair. On Oct. 11, 1973, at 7:55 p.m., Brent Scowcroft called from the National Security Council and told Kissinger that British P.M. Edward Heath wanted to talk to Nixon within the next 30 minutes. "Can we tell them no?" Kissinger responded. "When I talked to the president, he was loaded." Elsewhere in the book, Nixon says of the press he famously loathed for most of his career: "Goddamn newspaper ----. They're a bunch of sluts."

26. Why did the press cover for Nixon's boozing, just like they do Jr.'s?
I read an excerpt from a review of Nancy Dickerson's recent biography, written by son, where he recalled that Nancy received a late night phone call from Dick Nixon. After she got off with him, her husband could see that she was very upset and he asked her what was wrong. She told him that she was very disturbed by Nixon's state of mind. He asked her "was he drunk?". She said "no, but I'd feel better if he was".
