The first hearings are underway in the Senate, there will certainly be more. There will probably be a criminal investigation pressed in the Justice Department; certainly great pressure is building for that, and it is a treaty obligation of the national government.

My position will not surprise you: the focus should be kept on the active criminals in the Bush administration, distractions should be avoided.

Whatever else the behavior of Democrats in Congress may or may not have been over the past eight years, it has not been criminal under any competent reading of international treaty or U.S. law.

Since at present, defenders of the Bush administration are trying to press a line that the real focus of outrage should be Speaker Pelosi, we on the left really ought not to play along with their game.

And many here are taking said bait because of their understandable (to me) dislike of her. When we see someone as an enemy we tend to attach ourselves to anything that reinforces that belief, but that's a dangerous road to take, and makes one highly susceptible to being manipulated.
