DU is going to donate $250 to a progressive non-profit. ONE LUCKY DUER WILL CHOOSE THE CHARITY!

Don't want an iPod or an autographed book? Here's your chance to do some good instead of getting some stuff!

Democratic Underground is going to donate $250 to a progressive non-profit. And one lucky DUer will decide who gets it.

Donate to Democratic Underground before 10pm ET (7pm PT) Thursday, May 14, and you will be automatically entered in the contest. The winner decides which progressive non-profit will get the donation.

We know this is not a typical "prize" to give away -- in fact, it's not really a prize at all. But given the current economic situation, with so many people facing tough times, we felt it was appropriate to try something like this. We know there is a risk, and there's a chance that this promotion might be a huge flop. But we thought it was worth trying to see how it goes.

The Democratic Underground Administrators reserve the right to determine whether a particular non-profit qualifies as "progressive" for the purposes of this contest. If the winner of the contest is unable or unwilling to designate a non-profit that is acceptable, then an alternate winner will be chosen. (In plain English: We're not going to give money to any organization that is anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-environment, or otherwise opposed to the broadly shared values of this progressive community.) The winner of the contest will be publicly announced after an acceptable non-profit has been chosen.

If you entered a previous contest this week, you are not automatically entered in this contest. Monthly subscribers will be automatically entered in this contest (and every other contest this week).

There will be a new prize giveaway each day this week during our fund drive, so be sure to check back to DU every day!

No purchase or donation necessary. Contest void where prohibited by law. http://upload.democraticunderground.com/contest/contest-rules-giving.html">Click here for contest rules.

Please be sure to kick and recommend this thread so more DUers can see it!

8. I donated earlier this week, but a progressive charity that direly needs money is...
...The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. http://www.clearwater.org
The organization was founded by Pete Seeger. They do education on the Hudson River, and fight to keep it clean. They sail a 106' sloop and run educational programs, as well as have actions against corporations, the likes of GE, who polluted the river with PCBs and Entergy who run the Indian Point nuclear plant. They help provide public access to the Hudson. It would be a good thing if they could get money to fix the boat, start their new educational programs, and take action to close Indian Point. The organization celebrates their 40th anniversary this year, their founder celebrates his 90th birthday this year, and our Hudson River was discovered by white men 400 years ago this year.
I hope that if DU cannot help them out, some of you can.

Edited on Wed May-13-09 09:33 PM by Hugin
Oh, thank goodness! *whew* I knew that's just the sort of thing I'd win.

(I'd turn the whole kit-n-kaboodle of the ribbons over to Midlo upthread... C.O.D., of course. ;) )

Hmm... A progressive non-profit organization.

11. Ooooh....
...I would have loved the autographed Obama book, the iPod, or the autographed Hillary books ... but I REALLY want this prize! I have enough "stuff" anyway, and I would be much more thrilled to send $250 to _______ (to be announced when/if it happens). Am happy for all the other winners, and keeping my fingers crossed for the next round. :)

29. Great Prize
...with so many great non-profits needing donations and so many, like me, unable to give $250--today we all win >^.^<

I'm hoping this donation goes to The Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture because torture was committed IN OUR NAME and I'm trying to figure out how to live with that. I've decided to give my tax cut to them--I've been giving it to a homeless shelter but this feels right for me.

32. Darn
waited too long to edit this post--wanted to change it 'cause it was so whiney-all-about-me. Sorry. Of course how I live with it matters not at all compared to how we can help those who lived through it, and the loved ones of those who didn't live through it--and how we make sure those responsible for it face justice.
