The photos America doesn't want seen

MORE photographs have been leaked of Iraqi citizens tortured by US soldiers at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad.

Tonight the SBS Dateline program plans to broadcast about 60 previously unpublished photographs that the US Government has been fighting to keep secret in a court case with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Although a US judge last year granted the union access to the photographs following a freedom-of-information request, the US Administration has appealed against the decision on the grounds their release would fuel anti-American sentiment.

1. If I recall correctly, the My Lai massacre photos first appeared in an Australian newspaper

I could be wrong. But the photos were absolutely released after Hersch broke the story.

EDIT: Corrections

2. "Fuel anti-American sentiment?"
I'm afraid that as bad as this is, the appearance of hiding it fosters worse.

What stuns me is the knowledge that anyone can actually do this kind of shit to another human being. So many of the photos, the soldiers have these shit-eatin' grins like they're having the time of their lives. WTF? I don't get the concept of blindly following orders, either (yes, I've always had a problem with authority). This is simply an epidemic of the old adage that "power corrupts."

I suspect that blatant ignorance doesn't hurt when you're looking for lackeys to carry out your evil deeds. I see some genius saw fit to write on someone's naked hip "I AM A RAPEST." Great, Chester. . . My gran would declare "smeller's the feller" because you're obviously much worse--and you're a fucking moron who probably fell into the military as a career of last resort because you barely made it through high school with those great spelling skills. Great patriot--your juvenile power trip was more important than what you were supposedly there for. Protecting the world from terrorism? Give me a break. This was cowboy assholery from the top down.

Yeah, it fuels my anti-American sentiment. (Gee, I thought we were safely past the self-loathing and embarrassment now that we don't have a president we have to be ashamed of. . . :eyes: )
