Holding her daughter that night
The both of them alone in the dark
The promise of life, and a dream
Tears dripped down her face
Young and pregnant
Scared
She had done the hardest thing in her life
chose to have her baby
In her face they were
day in and out
Talking about life
How special and precious it was
Out of work now
Had to take time off when daughter was ill
No health insurance
Bills mounting
Two alone against the world
Welfare cut
No medicine for her little one
No electricity, soon no water
And soon, no place to live
Protectors of her child were once many
As they say they now are
We will fight wars for you
Others will die so you can be free
And yet she needs not for others
In far away lands to die
She does not need for much talk
Baby food, diapers, a roof over head
Yet such a sacrifice
Few seem willing to embrace
A few dollars here and there
Payroll, tax on large tv's or stock gains
We will give our lives they say
Anything to protect you from harm
Except the one thing so easy to give
No life loss needed, no bombs
Tears of a woman all alone flow now
a good woman they said for having her child
Now bad for wanting her to have the help she needs
She held that little girl close then
Promises of love and doing what is best for us
all gone now because we are not like them
When did life become so cheap she wondered
And when did those who embraced it become bad

A woman holds her child and cries for them
