Global warming related? Record-breaking floods in Alaska.
Edited on Tue May-12-09 02:43 PM by Blue_In_AK
The national news doesn't seem to care much about what goes on in Alaska unless it has something to do with EssPee, but an early breakup on the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers, caused by a very rapid spring thaw, has devastated villages across a very wide swath of the state, most particularly Eagle which essentially has been crushed by ice blocks the size of houses and then washed away.

Several stories are here at the Anchorage Daily News village blog http://community.adn.com/adn/blog/104297

and a heartbreaking video here at KTUU http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10342108

and here http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10337023

Please remember these people in your thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine the devastation.

And if you can stand it, here is a video of EssPee herself surveying the damage and touting the "self-sufficiency" of the residents of Eagle. She makes me gag. http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/05/ktuu-raw-video-from-palin-eagle-visit.html

2. This is very bad. They store their human waste in the barrels because they cannot chance
breaking and drilling into the permafrost. This bodes very poorly for the planet. Palin is an ass.

3. Thanks for the news on this, Blue..
Poor things..you just never know where the next natural disaster is going to occur. That sounds like just the opposite of the lava flows on The Big Island wiping out villages on that island.:(

I can't stomach it and just figured out why she's called "EssPee".

4. They showed a brief clip on our midday news, no actually flooding, just video from
the dry wreckage aftermath, the clip seemed to focus more on Palin walking around touring the area. No real explanation or background on the flooding; itself.

Peace to you, Blue_In_AK and thanks for the thread.

5. k&r for Eagle Village and villages further along the Yukon and Kuskokwim
I lived in Eagle when pregnant, saw the TCC health person at the clinic for check ups.

"The barn-red medical clinic landed far from its foundation, yet a potted green plant perched unharmed in an unbroken window. "
