Science Trumps Intelligent Design Again
Edited on Sat May-09-09 01:58 PM by AlBrattOnline
While Bible-Thumping Creationists continue to teach that God’s Intelligent Design is responsible for the origin of Earth and Man, science continues to trump their efforts.

“Ten Amino Acids Thermodynamically Favored”
from Talk Reason.org

In the famous Miller-Urey experiment, amino acids, the “building blocks of proteins,” can be relatively easily produced by simple, natural processes. Ten of the 20 life building amino acids were created in conditions similar to the atmosphere of a young planet Earth.

Bottom line:

“...if these 10 amino acids were the basis of life on Earth, and they form so favorably, then there’s a very good chance that life on other planets may have originally used the same 10 amino acids.”
<...>

“...the fact remains that life here on Earth might have a lot in common with life elsewhere....”

2. Rules for the Science forum: "Threads about topics that are not science are not welcome here."
Since "Intelligent Design" isn't science, this thread doesn't belong here.

Welcome to the DU Science Forum
<snip>
Threads about topics that are not science are not welcome here. Don't even post threads bashing pseudoscience, because most people here in the science forum don't need to be convinced, but more importantly because such topics are bait for people to come here and argue the opposing viewpoint -- and then all hell breaks loose. If you want to discuss pseudoscience there are plenty of other places on DU where you can do so.

4. Nice!
I think this the first time I've seen a thread moved to GD from one of the Topic forums.

And appropriately, too!

3. What I have never understood about amino acid and protein first evolution
Is how one gets to a nucleotide based (RNA or DNA) information storage system that works in completely the opposite direction from a system that translates a.a. sequences into nucleic acid sequences.

A couple of years ago Noshimoto argued that everse translation was common "early" in evolution of life and allowed for a symmetrical bi-directional translation. That required the conjecture of some novel components, such as reverse-tRNA and sequences being read 3' to 5'.

Certainly reverse transcriptase opened our eyes to the notion of "wrong-way" information flow between rna and dna.

Molecular evolution isn't really in my area of focus so I could have missed it, does anyone have a citation that discusses reverse translation, reverse-trna's or other components of the existance of either reverse or bidirectional translation in a natural system?
