Texas Couple Accused of Shooting Man, 2 Kids
Edited on Fri May-08-09 04:51 PM by Are_grits_groceries
HOUSTON (AP) -- A couple is accused of opening fire and wounding four people -- including a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl -- who they mistakenly thought were trespassing on their property.

The victims, who were off-roading near a residential area about 40 miles northeast of Houston, were struck with shotgun pellets late Thursday after stopping their vehicles near the Trinity River so the children could go to the bathroom, said Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor.

Police said resident Sheila Muhs, 45, fired once with a 12-gauge shotgun then handed it to her husband, Gale Muhs, also 45. DeFoor said Sheila Muhs called 911 and told the dispatcher, ''They're out here tearing up the levee, so I shot them.''

The Muhs have been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Muhs don't have an attorney yet to comment on their case, DeFoor said.

Donald Coffee Jr., the 7-year-old boy, was shot in the head and was in critical condition Friday. Patrick Cammack, a friend of the boy's father who was driving in a separate vehicle, also was shot in the head and in critical condition.

15. My first thought too, but doubt they'd call 911 if that were the case.
They're just those "get off ma land" types.

11. I grew up in that area
and in their defense, the Trinity River floods catastrophically there. I can see how they would be concerned over somebody "tearing up the levee". However, some people have never learned to deal without meaness and ignorance. Or using firearms.

Two kids among victims of quadruple shooting in Liberty County
12:27 PM CDT on Friday, May 8, 2009
By Kevin Peters / 11 News

Video LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas -- Four people were shot late Thursday while driving across a levee near Lake Timberlake in Liberty County.

Two children were among the victims.

A 7-year-old boy was shot in the head and remains in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. A 5-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man are also hospitalized with bullet wounds. Both are in stable condition.

Gale and Sheila Muhs, a Liberty County couple, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Liberty County Sheriff Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor said Sheila Muhs is the one who called 911 to report the shooting.

DeFoor said Muhs claims she shot the victims because they were tearing up the dike.
