Gas prices going up where you are?
Up 17 cents here in NE Kansas from a little over a week ago. $2.04/gal here. Any earthly reason why? Or is it just the summertime non election year gouge?

2. Yes! WTF?
I guess they're only tied with futures when the prices go up.

16. The official term for that phenomenon is "sticky prices"...
...as in "sticky-ing it to the consumer yet again." :grr:

12. On the other side of the mountains
Here in central Washington where I live the price is up to $2.55, it was $2.49 last week. This always happens before the memorial day weekend, but since oil prices are in the mid $50 range, it makes no sense that gas prices are going up so much. Last week I read that oil storage around the world is running out of space to put it all. Those with money have been buying it up cheap and storing it in hopes the price goes through the roof again. The old crap about "supply and demand" doesn't seem to work when prices go down instead of up!

24. That is odd. I live only 45 miles south of Seattle in Lakewood
Edited on Thu May-07-09 08:52 PM by quiller4
and the price at the Tesaro station down the block dropped from $2.12 last week to $2.07 today. The price at the Shell station 4 blocks further from I-5 was $2.05 this evening.

There are stations that are higher but the average around here is probably $2.10 which is pretty much what it has been for 2-3 weeks.

6.  Also in STL as well last week
Prices usually go up on Thursday's here. 2 weeks ago, when I didn't need it' it got down to 1.83 Then On Friday jumped to 1.99. This week it dropped back to 1.93 on Wednesday, but is now anywhere from 2.09 to 1.99 depending.
Try gasbuddy.com for your local area to find the lowest price

7. The earthly reason why is that people are willing to pay
Once upon a time we thought that oil was cheap and plentiful.

We organized our society so that for most people, buying gas is a necessity, not a choice.

We were wrong.

Sucks to be us.

14. Here in Bay Area
it has gone up about 40 cents/gallon in 6 weeks or so.

$2.42 at most retail, $2.19 at Costco.

Was about $1.99 just before inauguration in January.

Get out the vaseline.

15. Yep -- up .10 in last week outside Seattle...
...to around $2.45. While I don't expect we'll see anything like the prices of last summer, it wouldn't surprise me to see them get near $3.00 before summer is over.

18. First it was speculators driving up prices just right before...
All the BANKS got into trouble and needed billions of bailout money... Which still hasn't received any attention from the government. 60 Minutes reported that Morgan Stanley was the biggest oil company in the world, but that's as far as it went. Sure, banks weren't ripping off the American People at the pump to cover their losses, right before they just went straight for the U.S. Treasury. NOT!

So which companies or industries are going under now, that we don't know about yet?

Follow who is speculating in it now, because they'll be the next ones wanting a bailout.

27. yeppers. up to 2.25 in town today, i noticed. been steadily going up
for awhile now. how long will it take, i wonder, for folks to start whining about the price of gas again. they usually wait until they can't afford to get to work, an then start complaining that there isn't alternative energy. but the price will drop a bit and they'll stop complaining again for awhile. i just don't get it. now, when they switch to a 'summer blend' then the prices do go up. whether this is due to that or not i don't know.
