"fucking General Petraeus ought to be ashamed." - Larry Johnson (ret. CIA)
"John McCain and Lindsey Graham put American soldiers' lives at risk just so they could have a photo op. That's the bottomline. Why didn't they do a ride along on a real patrol? Perhaps they could have joined the U.S. team that responded to an ambush of an American patrol yesterday? Of course a total of six U.S. soldiers died in that operation. Shit! You can't take real risks. No sir. Instead, U.S. military resources are devoted to making propaganda. U.S. soldiers were ordered into harms way just to ensure a congressional delegation could walk around, look serious, and perpetuate the lie that more U.S. soldiers must come to Iraq and die. That was a propaganda event and fucking General Petraeus ought to be ashamed."

8. maybe Petraeus has no choice
maybe the civilian leadership of the Pentagon are fascist war criminals who have anointed mccain as the caretaker of the bush monarchy until jeb's image is sufficiently rehabilitated or noelle is ready to take over.

17. what makes you think they didn't?
the official numbing number was 100 US ground troops. How can we tell how many mercs were involved as well?

I was being a little sarcastic. I have read where every fucking VIP from the US uses them in addition to many of the Iraqi puppets.

9. The only good thing about photo-ops is that pols usually make complete asses of themselves.
In this case they managed to do so with the aid of the troops provided by the hard-fightin', no-nonsense, pragmatic, knows-how-to-win, general who also knows who's asses to kiss. As most generals do and which supersedes all other considerations.

10. Centurion Petraeus escorted Senator McCain through the streets
of a conquered nation! So safe and loved are the Romans! I hope they could see through all those flowers being thrown at their feet! Did Senator McCain drink any of the water or watch TV all day at a house close by? Doesn't matter, we are loved by the world!

He was too busy brainstorming political stunts to be bothered with worrying about some damn colonial upset.

15. Add to that his secret meetings with GOP-ers where he promises August results
(heard from Randi - Andrea Mitchell spilled it on Tweety's show). That ought to be illegal for a general too, right?

24. Isn't there a law that says government property can not be used
for political means unless the pug party pays the cost? Dems to, of course. In the past some idiot would go out to a fund raiser in air force one and then be asked to show that it was government business. Surely this is the case with McCain. He has been there in Iraq before so the ONLY reason he went this time is to prove a political campaign statement.

On the other hand the trips to Syria are not just political, they are fact finding trips.

27. Quick question: Exactly what choice did Petraeus have?
David Petraeus knows Bush wants to be the first president since World War II to order a nuclear strike. He alsoknows nuclear strikes are bad.

Most of us, given two nutball US Senators who want to have a photo op strolling the streets of Baghdad so they can prove just how safe it is there, would have called the motor pool, ordered up an unarmored Humvee, given McCain and Graham the key to the steering wheeland provided them directions to the most dangerous neighborhood we could think of. "Oh, and take Paul Bremer with you. He's a GREAT guide. He knows all the best shops."

Three days from now, McCain, Graham and Bremer's bodies would be floating face-down in the Tigris, they'd be doing a Humvee on the Iraqi version of "Pimp My Ride," and Bush would nuke Iraq into glass.

Take a deep breath and listen: The only way we get out of this with any friends left in the world is if we don't give Bush an excuse to drop The Bomb on someone. Because he'd fuckin' do it, man, and Petraeus knows it.
