Most Americans oppose probe of Bush officials on torture: CNN poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Most Americans do not believe Congress should investigate officials in the previous administration for authorizing the use of harsh interrogation procedures, including waterboarding, a poll released Wednesday found.

The poll by CNN television and the Opinion Research Corporation found that 60 percent of those surveyed believed the procedures constituted torture, but were sharply divided over whether they approved of their use.

President Barack Obama has left the door open to investigations of officials in the administration of former president George W. Bush, but the issue remains a contentious one.

Fifty percent of those surveyed said they approved of the Bush administration's decision to approve the methods, which included a form of near drowning known as waterboarding.

Another 46 percent were opposed and three percent had no opinion, according to the results of the survey of 2,019 adult Americans, which was conducted April 23-26, 2009.

1. The American character revealed?

Where is the will and courage to face
one of the most horrendous chapters in American history?

This is too big of a job for Obama to do alone
without the backing of the American people.

5. The American Character continually evolves as does opinion polls.

The corporate media's reporting, lack of reporting and spin on any story has great influence on American Perception.

I believe the American People in general don't like confrontation, however given enough factual information in proper context, the people will make the right decision; even if it's painful.

I view this poll more as a reflection of the corporate media's values in general, than of the American People as a whole.

6. You are correct.
PC agrees with you.
As more information is revealed, public opinion
will change.
Obama takes things step by step.

3. I bet that the 50 % of those that approve, would have a very quick change of heart...
if it were them being waterboarded.

4. Naw, can't believe it. Who exactly did they survey, when, where, how many, etc.?
Most people I've run into WANT an investigation and are pretty pissed off that nothing's been done.

Gonna follow the link and see just exactly who they "chose" to survey.

grrrr.
