3. "Death Cab For Cutie"...
...should have quotes around it.

It's the name of a band.

9. We don't put quotes around "The Beatles" or "Nirvana,"
except of course for situations like the above, where I am trying to signify that the names of the bands refer to the names themselves and not to the bands which they usually represent.

18. It's standard AP Style to put quotes around...
...the titles of magazines, newspapers, band names, book, song and play titles, etc.

It's been a while since I was a journalist, and had my trusty AP Style Manual with me at all times, but
I'm pretty sure that's the rule.

23. you don't use quotation marks for band names
Edited on Wed May-06-09 02:42 PM by fizzgig
you don't see "the rolling stones" or "pink floyd" in publications, just as you wouldn't see "mozart" or "bach". nor, according to my ap style book, do you use quotation marks around the names of magazines or newspapers.

Edited on Wed May-06-09 01:45 PM by Occam Bandage
In this article, the members of the rock and roll band named Death Cab for Cutie, who play a style of music often described as "indie rock" (so named as a result of the style's origin among small independent rock bands not affiliated with major music labels), will talk about the experiences they had while traveling from place to place in order to play concerts in multiple locations.

8. Paul is Dead.
The name of the band came from a song sequence from the Beatles film "Magical Mystery Tour".
"Death Cab For Cutie" was an in your face clue for the "Paul is Dead" believers, Paul being the
"Cute" Beatle and such. There were many clues referring to his untimely demise via automobile.
BTW, He didn't really die but did have an extended vacation with a double standing in between '66-68.

17. Setting aside the question of how a group signed to a major label, promoted on a Time Warner website
can be described as "indie"... (And please don't try to claim that "indie" is a style of music; it's not.)

20. In other words it's a co-opted marketing term which is entirely illogical in its application.
"alternative rock" is what the marketers tried to call it 20 years ago, but that term got the stink of Madison Avenue on it long ago.

So now, multinational corporations market "indie" rock.

Edited on Wed May-06-09 02:43 PM by Occam Bandage
"Escalate" is a back-formation from the name of a particular brand of moving staircase: Escalator. Corporations are a major source of word and phrase formation.

27. Well, not in an absolute sense, but overall, yes. Unfortunately, indie movies went the same route
Depends on the crossover appeal, too.

Believe it or not, tho, there are still a crazy number of very indie/underground metal bands that thrive within their own various sub-genres. I routinely buy actual vinyl records (and cds) from the tiny labels and distros who work w/many such bands.

30. The ultimate "indie" is self-published stuff.
My over-riding point is that "indie" is a style of music only to marketing folks and people likely too young (and too old, as I suspect is the case with Mr. Opposite-of-Razor) to understand how the former manipulate them.

"I routinely buy actual vinyl records (and cds) from the tiny labels and distros who work w/many such bands."

Uh-huh. I got a 7" in the mail the other day published by the now defunct Bobsled Records. Now that is truly an "indie" record, but neither I nor any fans of the band in question would likely describe it that way.

Gravity, Teepee, Rise Above, I Hate Records, Meteor City, Psychedoomelic, Church Within/Doom Dealer, Eyes Like Snow, Electric Earth, Shadow Kingdom, Southern Lord, Holy Mountain ...there's actually quite a few, really solid small metal labels hard at work.
