I never thought that magically he'd be a great Democrat, but wouldn't we rather have him partially on our side than predominantly on their side? He'll have to accede to at least some of our leadership votes that he wouldn't have if he were still a republican.
2. Arlen will vote about the same regardless of his political affiliation
That's the definition of a moderate. One of the reasons he came over to the Democratic Party is that they will allow him to do that without punishing him for having free will.
I really don't see how this hurts the Democrats in any way, and it makes the Republicans look like idiots. You should be happy about this.
