How do you get such high gas prices if it is just market forces at work?

1. It's simple, Bush asked his oil pals to screw California to "get back" at Pelosi
Same thing happened with Enron 6 years ago.

3. Filled up last night. San Diego. $3.39 a gal.
I'm sure that if I look at the sign this morning it'll be at least $3.45!

4. Inaccurate. It's more like $3.26/gallon for regular unleaded. (Lower than last May.)

21. Highest reported in SF was $3.59 at Market & Castro. (I can imagine higher on Van Ness, though.)

Folks should participate in "Gas Buddy," imho. I've found it quite reliable around here in the NW Detroit 'burbs.

Here's the relevant site for San Francisco ... http://www.sanfrangasprices.com/

It looks like gas is easily available for $3.25/gallon around the city.

On edit: I do see (on the map) a station priced at $3.97 near the 80 on-ramp (SoMa, near 8th and Folsom).

5. Everytime an Iran attack rumor circulates, gas goes UP.
Well worth it to position our troops in the area and feed the panic. Well, worth it for BushCo.

7. Anyone want to venture a guess as to how many billions in profits
the oil companies are going to report for the last quarter?

Remember, it costs them more, too... :eyes:

Thought I'd better add :sarcasm: just to make sure no one thought I was defending the f*ckers.

8. You don't. It's called "gouging" consumers.
Oil companies are making record profits! And I don't think that is an accident. The profits are bought and paid for by the bush administration, and those that paid to get him selected into office in 2000.

And it isn't going to get any better as long as we have this idiot in cheif, or any other Republican in the White House.

9. California emission standards are partly to blame for this
California requiere s special grade of gasoline and it is seasonally adjustes. We wind up paying at the pump for those adjustment.

The oil companioes have said that prices would go down if there was one national standard for gassoline rather than 10 or 20.

11. inelasticity of Demand
The price goes up and p[eople not only do not use less. But as a group they are using more than ever before. Now if you could sell two hot dogs for a dollar each or three for $1.50 each, what would you do?

14. Exactly
If there is a shock in supply, then the gas prices have to rise up signifigantly to lower the damand for gas. For example if the supply of stock goes down 5%, the price of gas goes up 20% to meet demand. Even though they are selling less, the increase of price more than makes up for it for the oil companies.

This always works out in the oil companies favor, but at the same time increases incentives for better fuel effeciency and conservation, so it could be good in the long term.

high prices now. That's the logic here, exxon is happy with it.

18. Paid $3.33 yesterday in LA. It's absolutely ludicrous.
At least in Europe most of their oil costs are taxes and it goes right back into their infrastructure. Here, it only goes to obscene oil company profits. :grr:

22. Correction: Gas in Calif as high as $4/gal or more ... sorry for the error
It was my mistake, the piece showed the price on signs in Calif(not sure where) and then went to average prices across the country.

I was wondering how it hit $4/gal in Calif without a lot more outcry than I heard.

Still, $3/gal is high enough.
