2 upstate NY men accused of stealing, eating calf
Sat May 2, 2009 5:56 PM EDTus-news, us, killed, calfAssociated PressImages (

PALMYRA — Two unemployed, hungry men stole a calf from a neighbor's barn, shot it with an arrow and slit its throat before roasting its meat, police said.

David Lochner, 21, and Timothy Welch, 18, were camping outside Palmyra, 20 miles southeast of Rochester, several weeks ago when a dairy farmer reported his calf missing, said State Police Investigator John Stubbe.

Authorities found a bloody bow and remains near the barn and in a river.

The two men first said they had shot a deer. But Stubbe said authorities later determined that the two had walked from their campsite to Brandon Hoad's barn and broken in.

The dairy farmer said the two were staying with someone who worked for him but knew nothing about the disappearance of the nearly 2-month-old female calf, named Emmy.

5. really no excuse?
no explanation? maybe mental unaddressed mental health issues?

(bty, this kind of thing did happen in the depression - people were eating other people's horses, stealing chickens etc.)

i don't think jail time is requsite - maybe psychiatric evaluation.

6. fine, give them a psych evaluation
but my guess is they're not mentally ill. the act in itself doesn't indicate that.

8. I don't know why this is surprising.
People are hungry.

Some people know where the meat on the styrofoam trays wrapped in cellophane comes from. In this part of the country, without a greenhouse, there is nothing that grows from the ground that is ready for harvest.

I guess it could be a lot worse, they could have slaughtered a full grown cow and left a lot more waste plus increased cost of the farmer's investment.

They were homeless, jobless.... without education and prospects, and had really bad haircuts. I don't know, they seem desperate to me or maybe they had too much to drink and had a really bad idea.

Perhaps they would have been better off begging at the thruway exits with "will work for food" signs or joining the military. But in one perspective, as young people in the 18-22 age group, they did show initiative and practical skill in procuring a basic need. They are not helpless mother dependent whiners nor crystal meth junkies (as they clearly had an appetite).

I don't condone their behavior, they stole property from the farmer. Perhaps the farmer would have raised the calf to be a milk cow, or raise and slaughter it himself to feed his family. They should be required to reimburse the farmer for the value of the calf and be charged with trespassing, breaking and entering and theft (poaching should cover all of that).

9. I doubt this had anything to do with hunger
much more likely that his was simply a couple of punks. And I live in northern vermont just a quarter of a mile down the road from a dairy farm. I know the care, love and hard work that small dairy farmers put into it. This baby wasn't being raised for meat. Dairy farmers don't raise females for meat. My guess was they were liquored up. And there are plenty of other ways to get a meal beyond stealing a calf and killing it.

12. Like I said, perhaps they were raising
the calf to be a milker. I was not saying it was okay because it would be slaughtered anyway, well, at least not until the farmer got his value from it. Theft is not okay.

Getting a meal out in rural areas isn't as simple as taking a bus to a food pantry or soup kitchen. I guess they could have tried fishing -- but that likely requires advance planning. Something tells me these boys aren't very good at that or deferred satisfaction.

14. I'm, sprry. I live in an area that's like upstate NY
there are options to feed yourself other than stealing a calf. you may think we're backwards but just about every small town has a food shelf and soup kitchens.

I live in upstate NY, a little over an hour away. Yes, there are food pantries in this part of the state, at least Rochester and its suburbs do. These guys were "camping" in farm country. Pantries are typically open a certain day of the week for a couple of hours, last I checked, Wegmans does not have a 24 hour charity food pantry. Perhaps they did not know which one might be open while camping out, in a rural area, at night and decided they were hungry. I don't think their behavior was well thought out. They stole a calf and ate it. If they stole a pie cooling in the window, would people still be as outraged? Like I said, I think they should compensate the value of the calf to the farmer and be charged with poaching or theft. I don't know about animal cruelty since it was not apparent they were being cruel (torturing) the animal. It appears they slaughtered it, cooked and ate it. Maybe they should have raided someone's garage freezer for venison, same difference. Theft is theft.

They shot it with arrows, which was incredibly unnecessary and stupid if they were killing it just to eat it. These yahoos seem like they wanted some target practice. Like other poster said, they were probably wasted.

"Stubbe said the two "decided they wanted something to eat," led the calf out of the barn, shot it with arrows and cut its throat."

Fuck those assholes. It's downrights cruel and psychopathic to shoot a little calf after LEADING IT OUT OF THE BARN. I hope they get animal cruelty charges.

17. This is so stupid
The flesh of most mammals in almost inedible until rigor mortis has passed. A fresh calf that has not had the rigor mortis pass would not be good and would be really tough, not like veal at all. It would take 12 plus hours (or so - it has been a long time since I studied this sort of thing).

So, those who are planning on slaughtering any large mammal, yes you must gut the beast right away. But it must han at least a day or you will not be pleased with the results. (Obviously, the smaller the beast the shorter rigor mortis will be.)
