19 years in his D.C. apt and he never unpacked his boxes or hung pictures. Reported in the WP this morning.

1. That's What Made Him Such A Good Justice...
I'm not sure who was a bigger let down for the GOOPers, John Paul Stevens or Souter. In '87 they tried to ramrod Bork and thought Souter was a stealth Bork. He turned out to be quite the opposite...and thank goodness and thank you, Justice Souter.

He didn't play the beltway games...didn't go to the drinkie-drinkie parties or pal up to the corporate media. I'd like to think of him as a rare independent...called 'em as he saw 'em and wasn't tainted by the money and egos all around.

3. He always gave me the impression of being a typical independent minded New England yankee
I was worreied when Poppy nominated him as I thought he would be a Coolidge in a black robe, but he turned out to be surprisingly liberal on many issues.

Yesterday's Globe had a real interesting piece on Souter and his hometown.

He is a country boy, pure and simple.
