I'm not sure who was a bigger let down for the GOOPers, John Paul Stevens or Souter. In '87 they tried to ramrod Bork and thought Souter was a stealth Bork. He turned out to be quite the opposite...and thank goodness and thank you, Justice Souter.
He didn't play the beltway games...didn't go to the drinkie-drinkie parties or pal up to the corporate media. I'd like to think of him as a rare independent...called 'em as he saw 'em and wasn't tainted by the money and egos all around.
3. He always gave me the impression of being a typical independent minded New England yankee
I was worreied when Poppy nominated him as I thought he would be a Coolidge in a black robe, but he turned out to be surprisingly liberal on many issues.
