FAIR HAVEN, CAYUGA COUNTY -- Jonathan Duffy was fishing on the shore of Lake Ontario last week, when he saw something odd on the beach. "I looked down, it lay right there on the rocks" he said.

Duffy described it as a three-foot-long "torpedo-like" device. Authorities say it was one of three phosphorous flares that have washed up on the shore of Lake Ontario over the past two weeks. One was picked up and dropped off at the Wayuga Newspaper offices in Wayne County on Monday. Local authorities called in a special ordnance explosive detachment from Fort Drum to detonate all three devices.

Duffy says when he found out it was a potentially explosive flare, it was "kind of scary...I was holding onto this thing. If it had gone off who knows what would have happened."

1. Flares are now "explosive devices?" That's a stretch, IMO

Sure, they explode as they're deployed, but the inference is that a B-O-M-B was found, not a dinky flare.

I think they ought to trace the source of the things, myself:

...Deputy Ryan says discoveries of these military type flares on the beaches have "occurred over the years."

Ryan says the flares appear to be military in nature. How they ended up on the shore of Lake Ontario seems to be a mystery.

Fort Drum Spokesperson Julie Cupernall had not heard of any military exercises on the lake, but even so she doubts the Army unit at Fort Drum would have been involved.

poor thing ...

I say this because of the last statement. He found a device that looks dangerous and instead of leaving it as it lie, picks it up and endangers others. I hear he wants to buy a plumbing business but is afraid of the taxes.
