16. Well, I've *felt* a 3.5 or so.
Once when I was sitting in my car at the time, and once when I was sitting in a dentist's chair at the time.

I was at the epicenter of a 4.something once - feels totally different there - like a quick blow with a very big sledgehammer.

Biggest I've ever been in was a 5.something. Bed shook for a while. I'd heard tales of swimming pools sloshing and hoped to see it so jumped out of bed, but no luck.

Funny thing, none of those did any damage at all to our house, but the extended drought in TX (before the recent heavy rains) damaged our foundation. Just hope not too much....

Shook my bed and woke me up.

15. I lived in tornado country for a while
At least with tornadoes you have some warning but I'd rather deal with the occasional earthquake any day myself.

20. Ditto.
I (stupidly) had no idea we were so close to the coast as the crow flies when we moved here (to former DeLay land). I've been in a pretty constant state of mild panic since Rita. And that didn't even hit us, as it turned out. But I got a lot of sore muscles and a sunburn from bringing in everything from the yard. I want to go back to San Diego so bad, earthquakes and all. I could even hack the housing prices, now, but they don't have any reciprocal arrangements for teaching certificates....

27. I know I couldn't handle hurricanes
non-stop howling winds drive me mad.

Well perhaps someday you can move back out here. Gotta admit the weather is the best so putting up with an occasional earthquake.... meh, piece of cake

29. It's not the sound for me (and I just went through Ike), it's the thought of
breaking windows and flying roofs. If we are going to stay here, I gotta get some proper storm shutters or something. And find a house that's a little higher off the ground.

Can't come back to CA until I retire - most states have reciprocal arrangements for teaching certificates, but not CA. I looked into just getting one the regular way, and came to the conclusion that I don't know how they get anybody to go into teaching there with all the hoops you must jump through.

21. Indeed
Hurricanes and tornadoes scare the crap out of me. :scared: With earthquakes, I'm usually clamoring to the window so I can watch the ground.

24. Now, I don't like hurricanes.
I was in NOLA for Katrina and I hope to never see another hurricane again.

But.... at least you get some warning.

Tornadoes would also freak me out!

30. True, you do get warning.
But if you are too close to the coast, all you can do about it is leave. And you're not in the clear until you get *far* in - Rita missed us, but clobbered Jasper, which I'd *never* thought of as being in line for a hurricane.

At least with earthquakes you can build properly and take general precautions (which I never considered onerous when we lived in SD) all the time, even if you don't know exactly when one will be coming.

I hate knowing I'm in hurricane country a lot more than I hate the politics here, and that's saying a lot!

:hi:

I didn't feel anything. I'm in South OC and wouldn't think you could feel it, but people around here said they felt shaking. Boo. I always miss the earthquakes.
