Fundies going after Miley Cyrus(Hannah Montana) for saying Jesus loves everyone
Edited on Thu Apr-30-09 04:34 PM by RamboLiberal
On the heels of the hate crimes vote in the House - a vote where the religious right claimed that laws against murder would somehow stop them from verbally criticizing gays - the religious right has just launched a campaign against Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus simply for saying that Jesus loves everyone, including gay people.

Talk about intolerant. Now we're going to threaten TV shows because their stars aren't homophobes? Because they believe that Jesus loved everybody? Should we throw her in jail too?

It's also ironic that the religious right was just all up in arms a week ago when blonde bimbette Miss California lost the Miss USA beauty pageant. They claim she lost because the judges didn't like her answer to a question on gay marriage (she's against it, but her answer also showed a decided lack of knowledge of the English language). The religious right has claimed that since Miss California lost, it shows that all of America is now in danger from the gay agenda. I know, it's all a bit weird, but what's important is that the religious right just launched a well-funded ad campaign featuring Miss California (paid for by the Mormon bigots?), talking about how intolerant the world is for not picking Miss California over Miss Arizona, and then the next day they launch a campaign against a TV star for simply saying she's pro-gay.

-----

And here is how the bigots at the American Family Association reacted:

Such statements will send the wrong message to our children who are influenced by this teenage megastar. Parents need to realize that Cyrus is not the positive role model she was once thought to be.... Clearly she is confused and does not understand the Bible.

but here, she's RIGHT FUCKING ON TARGET.

All she's done is quote a basic tenet of Christianity, so of COURSE the freepers are PO'ed...

And you're right, M - she's a cute kid.

Good for her! Until about 30 seconds ago I really didn't have an opinion about her, but this puts a big fat check-mark in the plus column.

Heck, if ol' Billy Ray comes out in her defense, I might even forgive him for Achy-Breaky Heart.

20. Not even Jesus loves Achy Breaky Heart
I mean, God, Love, Infinite Mind and all that stuff, but some things are just pure, concentrated EVIL.

But I have to say, watching the American Family Association getting knots in its knickers over the theological pronouncements of a 17-year-old says more and worse things about them than I could in a month of posts.

3. That's the way I learned it. There was no version of this song that excluded anyone
"Jesus loves the little children.
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
they are precious in his sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world."

There was no "but not if they're gay" refrain in there anywhere.

16. Not all Sunday schools teach hate
The Religous Right definitely teaches that Jesus doesn't love gay people. Ofcourse gay people are not the only group that Jesus doesn't love in their opinion.

There are fortunately some Christian denominations that teach that Jesus loves everyone. They get less attention which leads people to falsely believe that all Christians hate gay people.

14. That should not surprise anyone. The fundies believe in double
predestination which claims that God did not die for all but only those He chooses to save - those he chooses to damn he did not die for. This is a totally false interpretation of the New Testament but then since they are so dumb about everything else why not the Bible? They cheapen His sacrifice.

54. Absolutely not true of Baptists Churches
They believe that Christ died for everyone and all you have to do is believe in him and ask him into your life. That is why there are Baptist Missionaries in every country in the world and hundreds more going out each month.

I know Presbyterians believe in Predestination, but they aren't quite fundies if you will. I am SOuthern and Baptist, but not Southern Baptist, but most of my family is. And I can tell you that most if not all think predestination is a farce. It totally invalidates the whole free will thing that we were given as created beings.

I see they have decided to run the Christians completely out as well.

Attacking kids for say Jesus loves EVERYONE isn't going to play with a sizable percentage of self identifying Christians or anyone sane.
These idiots aren't Christians, they haven't even cracked the New Testament. In fact, I'd say they've got a few very selected verses from the first four Books and called it a day.

Regardless of how folks stand on faith and religion, I think its just wrongheaded to call these insane haters Christians. They are truly the American Taliban and probably the most likely inhabitants of Hell.

If the Cyrus family is smart, they'll spin this into a TV movie, with a guest spot for Dolly (what a fairy godmother!) - make the fundies look worse, stomp on bullying and bigotry, give Miley a little room to be a real actor, and everybody will get paid except the haters!

Filled with hate and fear every day. Scared of shadows. Hours spent writing and reading idiotic, mean-spirited e-mails about Obama and the "gay agenda". Mesmerized each night by the screeching heads on Fox "News". Praying fervently to the God Of Love for the suffering and deaths of those they hate.

It must be a living hell. These are bitter, desperately unhappy people. And on top of that, they all have to live in crappy little dead-end hamlets (think Wasilla) and seedy, run-down trailer parks! I'd feel sorry for them if they weren't evil.

45. That's insane!!! Have they read the new testament ? Still Jesus
might not have loved everyone, though he was fine with most sinners...
but he sure was tough on the Pharisees. Did all that "Woe unto you" and calling them hypocrites and fools and blind and saying really harsh things about how nasty they are inside while appearing so righteous outside. He even called them serpents and vipers, asked "how can ye escape the damnation of hell?"

He just wasn't that into them. Funny when you think about it... who he described so harshly would be in today's terms the very leaders that are condemning gays. Hey he even foresaw the mortgage crisis since one of the "woe unto you" was about
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Don't imagine he'd be too crazy about those condemning a kid for speaking of his love.
But I recall in 2004 CBS and NBC refusing to run a wonderful ad that said "Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we." by the United Church of Christ.
They said the commercial touched on the inclusion of gay couples and other minorities and since the bush administration had proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman the spot was too controversial and unacceptable for broadcast

That was shocking to me. It's true that gays were being politically demonized but that made a church letting them know they were welcomed there (and by Jesus) just a nice healing message- not a controversial one.

But now I understand that better. They must have had freeper types making the network decisions. Ugly

48. So Christians believe that Jesus hates gay people?
And now we find that the more people go to church, the more they believe that America should torture people, you know, the way Jesus said we should. The King Of Pain, I believe he called himself.

I'm beginning to think that it is the merest linguistic coincidence that the first six letters of "Christian" spell "Christ". Clearly, the beliefs of these people are horrifically cruel and violent, and about as far as you can get from anything Jesus ever did, said, or stood for.

Hell, I'm more "Christian" than they are. And I haven't been to a church service since 1967!

55. Wait, didn't Christ say that he loves everybody?
And isn't one of the basic tenants of evangelical and fundamental Christianity is that they take the word of the Bible, and Christ, literally? But now they're rejecting Christ's commands to love everybody?

My head hurts, these people are fucking insane, and they're certainly not Christians.

56. "didn't Christ say that he loves everybody"
I don't know; is that in the gospels somewhere?

59. Yes, that was a rhetorical question
Christ mentions several times throughout the gospels about loving everyone, from the least among us on up, love thy neighbor, etc. etc. These so called fundamentalists are violating their own religious tenants.

57. Does Jesus love everyone?
Like almost any issue in Christianity, you could probably paste together biblical passages to make an argument for either answer to the question.

67. Did the Fundies not learn the great Sunday School classic?
Jesus loves me! this I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
they are weak but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! loves me still,
'tho I'm very weak and ill,
that I might from sin be free,
bled and died upon the tree.

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died
heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
let His little child come in.

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He will stay
close beside me all the way.
Thou hast bled and died for me,
I will henceforth live for Thee.

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Pretty easy to understand, if you ask me.

73. Didn't Jesus love everyone including "sinners"?
This was taught to me when I was child in church. No longer religous but I thought it was commonly taught that Jesus does love everyone.

"God loves you just the way you are." I can't get over all these assholes who say 'God wants you to HATE.'
