Terry Jones on the British Captives: "Call That Humiliation?"

No hoods. No electric shocks. No beatings. These Iranians clearly are a very uncivilised bunch

Terry Jones
Saturday March 31, 2007
The Guardian

I share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarettes, for example, even though it has been proven that smoking kills. And as for compelling poor servicewoman Faye Turney to wear a black headscarf, and then allowing the picture to be posted around the world - have the Iranians no concept of civilised behaviour? For God's sake, what's wrong with putting a bag over her head? That's what we do with the Muslims we capture: we put bags over their heads, so it's hard to breathe. Then it's perfectly acceptable to take photographs of them and circulate them to the press because the captives can't be recognised and humiliated in the way these unfortunate British service people are.

It is also unacceptable that these British captives should be made to talk on television and say things that they may regret later. If the Iranians put duct tape over their mouths, like we do to our captives, they wouldn't be able to talk at all. Of course they'd probably find it even harder to breathe - especially with a bag over their head - but at least they wouldn't be humiliated.

1. Hey, no one's been pointing at their genitals and grinning, either;
what's up with that? Not even a naked pyramid (where's a :sad head shake: smilie when you need one?).

3. Yes, the Iranian have treated the Brits with more respect
Edited on Sun Apr-01-07 10:51 PM by Erika
than W did supposed insurgents. Iranians have not sicced dogs on the Brits or forced them to put panties on their heads.

4. Pretty much what I thought when bLiar was whinging about the Geneva Conventions
Too bad he and Bush** dug themselves a deep hole in their high moral ground years ago. Videotaping "captives" is nothing compared to what the UK and USA has done to "detainees".

But bLiar's right about one thing: even videotaping them is illegal.

6. W allowed Saddam to be shown in his undershorts to the world
Yes, W lost the moral ground the U.S. once had.

9. Don't forget the beauty shots of Sadam's sons.
So "civilized", don't you think?

I would post the lovely shots of Odai and Qusai
that we allowed to be released, but ......

10. The U.S. disgraced themselves by the pics of Saddam and his family
I am ashamed. There is nothing Christian or moral about the release of these pics. This country did nothing to us and was never a threat. Shame on us.

11. Good wit and yet
that we have done horrible wrong does not make what is happening to these soldiers right. Two wrongs do not, in fact, make anything right in this situation.

14. Do tell...
What is so egregious about "what is happening to these soldiers"? From all I've seen, they've been treated with the utmost cordiality. Aside from the hijab, that is. And really, is putting an innocuous garment on a prisoner really that injurious?

16. Mr. Jones nails it!
Neither the UK nor the US has ANY credibility when they whine about the pictures being a breach of the Geneva Conventions. The hypocrisy of them attempting to do so, re the pictures from Iran, showing the British soldiers still in their uniforms instead of orange jumpsuits, their hands free instead of handcuffed behind their backs as is the case for the Gitmo/Iraq prisoners, etc, is breathtaking, imo.
