After the shit settled down we divvied up C-Rats, and I pulled ham and mother-fuckers! Seriously, was there anything worse?

1. Da Spagetti
Once you got the C4 lit and the spagetti can over it if you weren't fast enough the entire contents would blurp (for lack of a better word) all over your hand or over the side of the can onto the ground. But yes, the Ham was bad too. LOL

2. Ah yes Ham and Lima beans or maybe a little fruit cake to go with..
We used to take the cans of cheese and put them in the fire pit and create flying Cheese Napalm just for added excitement..

3. No, but I did have a dream the loudspeaker was blaring...
..."Sweepers, Sweepers, man your brooms. Give the ship a clean sweep down both fore and aft! Sweep down all lower decks, ladder wells and passageways! Dump all garbage clear of the fantail"

:/

32. Mine begins "there are men working in the sail..."
Do not raise, lower, rotate or radiate from any mast or antenna. There are men working in the sail.

What's that fantail thingy? ;)

God, I loved to drink that juice after eating the fruit.

8. Sure. MRE Tuna With Noodles. Such stuff as screams are made of.
I always thought that the guys who made the MREs knew how rotten Tw/N was because they always put Chocolate Nut Cake in with it. A consolation prize, I guess.

shows they never had Cs....

15. I picked up a couple of MCI's at a surplus store once and tried them out.
Pork Slices. Not too bad, but I hedged my bets like the guys in "Platoon" and smothered them in Tabasco first.

11. One of the best things about my days in the Army was RARELY being forced to eat C-rats.
I detested them ... especially the Ham and Lima beans. :puke:

The only time I recall specifically eating that shit was stateside during field training. I guess I had 'em in Nam, but I can't figure out when. (Some things are best forgotten.) One thing about being an office pogue at Long Binh was fairly decent food. It was best when the Vietnamese mess hall helpers took over once a week ... or when Sgt. Saito took the steak and did teriyaki for a cookout.

12. I loved them, but only the ones that had been around for at
least 15 years or so.
I was born in 1947, and I have eaten C's that were born years before that....

13. I think those were K rations
C rations came a bit later and they were much improved over Ks but then came the LRRPs and what we wouldn't have done for them.

20. They were indeed C's - I have eaten them labeled 1945.
Some of the C's were not bad at all, some were biological warfare - the ham & eggs come to mind.

24. You could tell the real old ones, some of them had Chesterfield cigarettes.
I'd agree with you on those Ham and eggs units except that in a fit of self defense my mind has blocked out all memory of them other than that they existed and were to be avoided at just about any cost.

Chesterfields and the oldest, strongest Kools ever made.....
Also the chocolat bar - my top sergeant called them John Wayne bars - he said you have to be a real man to be able to eat one.

28. I remember the K rations quite well although I was too young to be issued any.
I always believed C rations were developed for the Korean conflict. C rations were actually not half bad except heavy as hell. We had to pack three days rations which was a case of Cs.. We were issued two hot beers a day as well and if you saved up a few days worth you could actually get a little buzz going..Helped get down some of those which weren't quite so palatable....Pound cake and peaches were exceptionally good trading material....

16. Helmet stew:
Take the cleanest steel pot among the group, fill with whatever Charliechow you can find (pork steak, beef & potatoes, etc). Mix 'em all together and heat over C-4. Eat as a bonding experience with your fire team or gun team.

Them's good eats!

17. Boned Chicken and WWII cigarettes.
Not to mention the "Chocolate" wrapped in foil that turned to dust when opened. Beanies and Wienies could be sold to the guys who got the chicken. And, the Peaches in syrup went for $2 a can for the sugar freaks.

What I could never understand is why they put in those little packets of toilet paper. C-Rats would plug you up for a week at a time.

I gotta say, fighting with a teletype as a weapon sure made that war different for me.

Being a QRF and member Phu Bai Power and Light Co. we still got to eat hot meals at a table...four times a day sometimes!

I was also dynomyte at bouncing a fiber-headed screw driver off the floor and back into my pocket!

Say, why did you guys always pull the freaking TAB key out of the keyboard anyway?

But really, I was a QRFy as part of the mortar team.

Then...becuase I was such a model soldier, I was rewarded with an all expenses paid trip to UDORN! And do yo know what? They even paid for the PENICILLEN!

"100 men test everyday today, but only 1, drinks like ASA!"

on edit...What did YOU roll THEM in? I couldn't find wrappers ANYWHERE!

Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 03:58 PM by ThomWV
No shit, I could eat 5 cans of them right now if I had them and a little chunk of C4 to heat them up. Now for pure nasty, do you recall that Turkey loaf or the meat-balls and beans (a gut-wrenching delight that seemed to appeal to some guys)? I was also a big fan of the Pimento Cheese spread, along with the 4 canned crackers.

26. I'm willing to say right now that you were the ONLY snuffie to love ham and mothers.
But you are correct that the turkey loaf was also foul. The only good thing is that the B-1s also contained peaches. I literally can close my eyes right now and remember the bliss as that juice cut the dust while it coated my throat.
