Catholic.org compared Miss Prejean to the Pope. "Miss California is a Christian. She is a student at San Diego Christian College, an evangelical Protestant school," it wrote. "She answered with the kind of integrity and honesty which speaks of what Pope Benedict XVI has called a 'moral

To be honest, I don't think that soliciting someone's political views at a beauty contest is either sensible or appropriate. I am not a big fan of beauty contests anyway - to me they're little more than anodyne fertility rituals. 'Miss California' is not a political office and so I really don't care what her personal views are. If she had come out and said 'gays are ruining California' or similar, I'd be offended. But her view on marriage as a straight thing was expressed politely and without rancor, which is fine with me.

It's no surprise that the right has made her into a cause celebre. It wasn't a good idea for the left to label her as a bigot and hurl invective as if she was the new Fred Phelps; doing so handed the issue to the right on a plate.
