14 Schools in Schertz/Cibolo School District Closed. More Swine Flu Cases Suspected.
Classes Canceled At SCUCISD This Week Due To Swine Flu
Extracurricular Activities Also Called Off

POSTED: Sunday, April 26, 2009
UPDATED: 4:33 pm CDT April 26, 2009
SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Department of State Health Services on Sunday announced that all 14 schools and district facilities in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District will be closed effective immediately after several more flu-like illnesses have been discovered in the department's ongoing swine flu investigation.

The closure will be in effect for at least a week.

The announcement comes one day after health officials announced the closure of Steele High School, where two students contracted the disease and a third case was pending.

All extracurricular activities also were cancelled.

1. What do you think about this?
Could Texas, or Perry, possibly be overreacting?

2. I'm really not sure.
Part of me is trying to be scientific and logical; the other part is a wee bit alarmed since I live so close to Cibolo. I've been sitting here thinking about Fiesta that occurred over the past 10 days; all the crowds and visitors from Mexico.

I think the state is taking direction from FEMA/CDC, so I don't think Perry has much to say about it. Might be wrong, but he won't be able to operate independently if Texas is a hot zone.

3. Ouch. I didn't know this was Fiesta season.
That would be cause for more concern.

5. I get the feeling a lot of kids in Texas are wishing they'd close all the schools
for a while. :)

6. I talked to my kids earlier.
Let them know that it's possible that if there are suspected cases at their school, it'll be closed and they'll come home. They didn't seem too upset about. ;-)

In all seriousness though - this is a really bad week to disrupt school - it's TAKS testing week here.

7. LOL! Did you guys see a Walgreens Ad at bottom?
Or is it just us here in Texas. For the record I'm perfectly OK with it, just amazing and sort of scary how effective the ad bot can be. I'm also happy that Walgreen's is strong enough to sponsor a site with strong opinions and convictions that might not always be in their best interest. OK - hope I didn't just step in it :-)
