My fellow DUers: May I ask what effect it would have on you if the last administration was brought
to justice? I know we're all supposed to be focusing on the economy and the state of the country,
but I am wondering what effect it would have on you to see the leaders of the last administration
brought before the world's jury? (sorry to be so dramatic)

3. All my favorite day-time TV shows would be pre-empted by coverage of the hearings
Which would be a big pain in the ass if I actually watched TV during the day

5. I would have peace of mind that there is hope for humanity.
As it stands now, our entire species is devolving into a brutal, heartless beast with no regard for justice or human rights. That's NOT a good thing.

6. My faith in the Constitution would be whole again, to paraphrase the sainted Barbara Jordan.
What a relief it would be.

9. Imagine what Barbara Jordan would be doing and saying
through the whole **** administration. She was amazing and the country lost a wonderful asset when she died.

As to my thoughts, the only way for us to move forward and out of our current mess is to bring the evildoers of the last administration to justice. It will take years to heal us as a nation but it would be a way back from the depths of Hell where we are now.

14. A sadistic kind of satisfaction watching r/w heads explode (especially Fox). I'll never forget
the righteous smugness of those bastards after they impeached Clinton. I'm just being honest.

15. I bet a lot of people truly feel the same way
But won't come right out and admit it. For what it's worth, I agree with you. A little tale of the Clinton impeachment. On Saturdays, a local establishment has a special on burger and fries so I decided to walk over there while hearings were going on. When I walked in, they had the impeachment hearings on tv. A mother was holding her infant child and he or she was crying. I said, "Yeah kid I agree. They never should have impeached him." Brought the house down.

18. It would restore my belief that we are a Nation of laws that apply equally
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 07:46 AM by Lorien
to all people, thereby restoring my hope that America can be a Nation where all people are equal under the law. To know that we are a country that endorses torture and the brutal invasion of a sovereign Nation on the basis of boldfaced lies is both humiliating and horrifying.

19. What everybody else said, PLUS this...
...it would give me some small modicum of reassurance that the outcome would serve as an example to all those who, in future, might consider walking down the same road as these criminals.

One of the reasons for the Bush administration we endured is that we never drove a wooden stake into the heart of Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld's evil back in 1974 by giving Nixon the treatment he truly deserved. Instead, we got Jerry Ford and his "look forward, not back" philosophy, and look at how it came back to haunt us. Those two just simmered and burned with ambition to get back into power and REALLY seize control next time...and that they did.

We need to adopt a scorched-earth philosophy toward leaders who betray this country's ideals. We need to tar their names forever with the brush of traitor, so that no one ever forgets what they did or allows them to regain the reins of power. This is our chance to do that.

History is an important pursuit. Not absolutely predictive but ALWAYS informative. ;-)

21. Encouraged by justice; concerned about the position Obama would be in.

My reaction is based in strong memories of the Nixon scandal and the Ford pardon. "Our long national nightmare," revised version.

22. the issue is not what effect it will have on me.
The issue is the effect it will have on people who are now in the military or in charge of the military when they are deciding how interrogations will be managed and how prisoners will be treated.

The issue is the effect it will have on the future soldiers and commanders who will be making those decisions, and whether they will be aware that they will be jailed if they are abusive - or if they are aware that there will be no consequences, because the US government, in the end, doesn't give a shit what they do to prisoners.

And the issue is the effect it will have on the prisoners themselves - whether they will be treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention or whether they will be victims of torture.

I HOPE nobody here is thinking "how does this affect ME?" This isn't about me.
