I read many government web sites - from the whitehouse one to govexec, from fbi to google's unclesam search.
I also read a ton of papers from all over the usnpl.com website which links to each states' papers and college papers as well as local news stations.
I also read the cdc's website on a regular basis (yeah, I am a news nerd. part of it is interest, part is also because I code websites for a living and have an interest in them on that level - like why in the heck does coast to coast AM not use an AJAX update panel for their picture albums and instead opt for a full page refresh for each photo you click on? You don't need a full page postback to the server for that...sheesh).
At any rate, on this swine flu thing - The cdc seems to be seriously concerned over it.
Does not mean it is hype, that the end of the world is coming, etc - but if a bunch of eggheads at a science agency are concerned over something I think maybe it is something worth watching along with them and having some concern over myself.
hell - I have been told the end is coming for as long as I have memories. Not just from fundies, but from folks telling me there was a new ice age coming, now global warming, hearing that nearly everything I am doing is soon going to destroy the world, to hearing when I was a kid back in the 70's that the rainforests would be completely gone in a few years.
Here we have a government agency who has a concern about something that could well do a lot of harm to a lot of people and some think we should not be concerned about it and have it in the news to educate people on it?
I say we need MORE of such things in the news, not less.
Do we get upset when folks talk about polar ice caps melting? Do we not ridicule the rw when they down play such issues?
yeah, this may well turn out to be nothing in the near future - might just blow over like other issues. But I sure as hell am glad to be aware of something like this and other things.
Would rather have the news orgs covering this story than what some star did or said.
Knowledge does not need to lead to panic - whether it be the earth is in trouble to a flu.
It can lead to heightened awareness though. And I would rather be aware of issues that may affect me than be entertained by so called news agencies.
If I want entertainment I would re-read the primary threads here :)
It's panic if you are worried about it - it's useful knowledge if it is something that allows you to make informed decisions.
I am not worried. I just added all this recent wave of info to the rest of it I have had the pleasure of reading here.
Now back to worrying about how we are all going to die because I drive a van and don't ride a bike 28 miles one way to work (a van I got for free I might add because my mom died and rarely drives it anymore - thought I best toss that out there before I got nailed for killing the earth and raining down certain destruction on you all out of my love for foreign oil - which I remember reading has reached a peak and we should all be living like the Amish now anyway....)
