I just got back from hiking down into the Grand Canyon, spending the night under the big dipper and hiking back up again!!!! WOW!

7. I was at the rim last year and regretted that I didn't have time to go down

I happened to be working in Phoenix for a few weeks and thought I would do it this week. I consider myself very lucky. It was truly marvelous.

I am not surprised that you might be "a little sore".. That is an EPIC trip, hiking down & back. I find it hard to believe that it is only one day down & one day back. .

My folks wanted to take us down on the mules (donkeys?),.. but my kid sister was too young for the trip..(This was WAY back when you didn't have to book years in advance)

10. truth time...

I thought because I walk and am in pretty good shape I would be fine. My daughther flew out from Vermont and we went to try to get a last minute permit to camp at Bright Angel. They said it was filled and I was not about to pass up the chance to go down (my dream was to cross the bridge over the Colorado). South Kaibab is steep and was very harsh on my legs. the ranger ended up giving us tents and sleeping bags and letting us camp for the night. We hiked back up Bright Angel. I wouldn't have missed it for anything.

I left the camp at 4:00am to avoid the heat. Did you get out early?

but it was 90 degrees down in this week, almost as hot as summer.

Bryce Canyon on Mule back last year. I will also never be the same. I'm old, you see.
North Rim?
When I saw the Grand Canyon, my first glimpse, my knees buckled, my eyes spouted water and as you can see I totally lost it for a minute.

16. as the mules passed

I realized that I would be terrified sitting up another 4+ feet(looking down some of the steep cliffs) and dependent on the mule walking the narrow trail... I was very happy to have my legs on the ground no matter how weak they were. I am almost 60 and we passed a gentleman that was 77 with a large pack on his back and he was just taking it slow and easy and having a great time. I do not like traveling for a living (better than no job though) but I have been very fortunate to be able to see many of the awesome places in the United States. The Redwood Forest is still my favorite.

17. Wow - I did not think you'd write back to me. I understand about the 4plus feet,

and I'm 60 as well, and not only that I had never been on a horse or a mule.
I'm of a frame of mind that says: if not now, when?

Once I was on the mule I did not know how to get off. I went down and down on paths that were so narrow, with drops to nirvana, and just kept talking to her.
"Brandy" you are my champ, I said. Please don't let this be the day we die.

I'm leaving in 2 days on a trip on I-40 crossing the country from the center of NC to Arizona, New Mexico and back. Camping in a VW camper. 3 weeks of bliss, hiking and photography.

Don't tell my buddies on the Photo Forum, so when I come back and start posting, it will be a surprise.

19. maybe some day in our old age

we can meet up and hike the full length of the Appalachian Trail- this is my really ultimate trip. A year ago I climbed up the Amicalola Falls as a symbolic start of my trip on the Appalachian Trail.
