Maggots in candy

Valrico, Florida - Kashana Kollie loves Nestle Goobers, so when she spotted a three for $3 sale at Walgreens, she took advantage.

There was nothing unusual about the first box of Goobers her family dug into during their movie night over the weekend, but she was in for a surprise when she opened up the second box.

"What I saw was something flew out of the box, something with wings flew out of the box... I have no idea what kind of bug it was," she said.

At a closer look, what used to be chocolate covered peanuts had degraded into a dirt-like material, and then she saw something move... maggots

1. Proof that if you keep gov't out of it you get free protein!
The market without regulation or pesky rules about food can give you this protein for free for the price of candy.

The market is godlike in it's ability to give us more if only it is allowed to roam free like the god it is.

3. Those product codes are very confusing.
Unless you had that .pdf handy, there's no way in hell you can tell when the candy expires just looking at the code. Why aren't they forced to put Month, Day, Year on the packaging like they do on food?

13. A lot of food dosen't have an expiration date
Expiration dates are related to food safety, not product quality.

If food does not require refrigeration, it probably doesn't require an expiration date.

From a food safety standpoint, a can tuna is SAFE to eat for 10 or 20 years, but would wouldn't really want to.

In terms of product quality, many food manufactures use a Best if used by date, which I believe it is 3 years for tuna.

Chocolate will start to oxidize and turn white if it is exposed to air at all, but it doesn't become unsafe to eat. It's "Best" to use within 2 years of manufacturing.

Best to use by dates are completely optional.

Product quality is most affected by storage, specifically temperature, cycles in temperature, humidity, and exposure to air.

An open bag of chocolate chips in an south Florida will be less suitable for use far faster than an unopened bag in Arizona. As such, it makes it hard for a manufacturer to know what date to use.

6. I go to a local wallgreens
I have bought candy there before and so now,I am going to inspect it before I eat it even bore carefully than I do now. I always check my food first sniff it,look it over, taste a bit if it passes I'll eat it.But if anything has me second guessing, or my intuition is put off I ain't gonna eat it.

This has served me well I haven't gotten sick from anything I have eaten for years.

26. The reason I asked....
when I was a young woman I was very interest in bugs...and discovered a 'pregnant' fly in my house and placed it into a jar with sugar and water mixture and waited to see the fly have her 'babies'...but the fly died and no babies were born...after that I read that maggots needed rotting .. it did say meat..but I recon that was the the BEST medium...

30. In murder scenes they can sometimes judge the times of death...
...by the amount of maggots. Because the flies show up so quickly they can use that to figure out the approximate time of death. After awhile, the body has decomposed to the point where that doesn't help.

Morbid yet neat at the same time. :)

34. Nope, just have a morbid sense of curiosity.
I saw it on a show about FBI forensics where they put actual corpses in the woods to see how they decay.

But entomology would make a fascinating career. Any field of science would be cool to me. :)

Now Nestle will have to add a maggot maturation date to all boxes.

27. It's not maggots

When I was a kid i found a worm inside my Mr Goodbar. Probably a lot of peanuts contain insect eggs, they just get eaten before they have time to hatch...

31. I ate a box of maggot-infested raisins once. A little box of sunmaid raisins.
Was about halfway through the box when I actually looked into it cause they tasted funny; saw little white crawly things. Promptly screamed, ran to the bathroom and puked.
