DailyKOS: Gestapo demands internets master key
DHS demand for DNS master key alarms nations
by Deep Harm
Sat Mar 31, 2007 at 04:03:53 PM PDT

Slashdot and Cryptome report that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is demanding the master key for the DNS root zone - a demand that has other nations alarmed. With the master key, DHS would have control over the Internet, as Slashdot describes, quoting an "anonymous reader."

The key will play an important role in the new DNSSec security extension, because it will make spoofing IP-addresses impossible. By forcing the IANA to hand out a copy of the master key, the US government will be the only institution that is able to spoof IP addresses and be able to break into computers connected to the Internet without much effort.

The issue arose at Friday's meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Lisbon, Portugal.

2. This ain't good
Whoever controls the flow of information has a major advantage.Likewise, having the ability to hack or spoof any oppositions info.
But then this should not be any surprise to us.PNAC and other sources have been speaking of seizing the high ground in cyberspace for a while now.Goes to show how fucked in the head they are when they consider the internet a war zone.

Like they moved to neutralize the media after watergate brought them down, now they are trying to take the reins of the internet to keep us from exposing them.

we can keep it on the front page on this venue...but it needs to be on the front page on the National scene...100,000 people can discuss it, but millions of people should be...this is very, very dangerous...we better be figuring out how people are going to stay in touch...we are causing this bunch trouble...they intend to put a stop to it...

This makes me wonder if they're still not thinking about Martial Law. Remember, in the patriot act, congress doesn't get a say in ANYTHING if they declare martial law.

I had this problem, on a college campus, with a domain publishing political content about election rigging. A cell call revealed it was available off campus.

This could certainly have an impact on the flow of information in EVERY country, not just ours. No one trusts BushCo - why would they willingly give them that much power?

25. They Won't.
This will be just one more brick in the wall that will eventually crumble and fall on the dying entity known as the United States.

Seriously, folks...this is never going to happen. It's the arrogance involved in it that we need to be concerned about, not the act itself, which is wishful thinking on the PNAC's part.

The fact is, our government cannot get away with stuff like this any longer. The rest of the world is onto us and, quite frankly, are mad as hell and aren't going to take it any longer.

28. DNS Root Name Servers explained
http://www.isoc.org/briefings/019/

What They Serve

Essentially the DNS root name servers reliably publish the contents of one small file to the Internet. The file is called the root zone file. On 12-Dec-2004 there were 5335 lines of text in the file which had a size of 119KB; you can find this particular version here: http://www.isoc.org/briefings/020/zonefile.shtml

This file is smaller than the ISOC home page http://www.isoc.org/. The root zone file also does not change very frequently; it changed only 7 times between 11-Nov-2004 and 12-Dec-2004 and only 90 times in the year preceeeding 12-Dec-2004. The individual changes are all localized and relatively small.

Compared to many other services on the Internet this service is rather unspectacular. The function and content of the root zone file are what make it special and cause it to be at the focus of increased attention. The root zone file is at the apex of a hierarchical distributed database called the Domain Name System (DNS). This database is used by almost all Internet applications to translate worldwide unique names like www.isoc.org into other identifiers; the web, e-mail and many other services make use of the DNS.

30. A definition of DNS
DNS

(Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the scenes from one application to another, DNS servers return the IP address of the server associated with that name.

In this hypothetical example, WWW.COMPANY.COM would be converted into the IP address 204.0.8.51. Without DNS, you would have to type the four numbers and dots into your browser to retrieve the Web site, which of course, you can do. Try finding the IP of a favorite Web site and type in the dotted number instead of the domain name!

A Hierarchy

The DNS system is a hierarchy of database servers that start with the root servers for all the top level domains (.com, .net, etc.). The root servers point to authoritative servers residing within ISPs and companies that resolve the host names to complete the name resolution. Using the example WWW.COMPANY.COM, COMPANY.COM is the domain name, and WWW is the host name. The domain name is the organization's identity on the Web, and the host name is the name of the actual Web server within that domain (see WWW). See DNS records, reverse DNS, DDNS, HOSTS file, mDNS, ping, root server and WINS.

Getting a Web Page
Turning a URL in a Web browser into an IP address can take numerous queries. This is a simplified diagram because the original requester actually talks to each name server in turn, and there can be more name servers in between. A request can also be satisfied from a DNS cache along the way and not need to reach the authoritative server.
