Washington: The Obama administration has warned that Pakistan posed a “mortal threat” to the U.S. and the world in the wake of rapid Taliban advances and bluntly told Islamabad it was “abdicating” power to the militia and extremists by agreeing to Islamic law in parts of the country.

U.S. "extremely concerned" about Pakistan security

U.S. defence chief urges action on Pakistan militants WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is "extremely concerned" about the security situation in Pakistan, the White House said on Thursday, a day after Washington said Islamabad had abdicated to militants in the Swat valley region.

Taliban militants have pushed closer to the capital Islamabad in recent days, saying their aim was to impose their harsh version of Islam across Pakistan. Unidentified gunmen attacked paramilitary troops who deployed to a district in the region on Thursday, killing a policeman escorting them.

"I think the news over the past several days is very disturbing. We're extremely concerned about the situation and it's something that takes a lot of the president's time," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told a news conference.
