The assumptions of the press have changed. You have to go back and look at the transcripts. The assumptions that Obama was saying "this" or "that" were unfounded at the very base. He hasn't changed what he's said, not one iota.

To have them out today howling that he "changed his mind" is stupid.

1. It keeps them from talking about the bigger issue of torture......
something they were freely doing yesterday,
when they thought that there would be no investigation,
or that folks were turning against Obama for what he said.

In otherwords, the media is the one doing a flip-flop...
like they always do. They just hope we don't notice.

3. They are stupid
I think they assumed as did I that the chief of staff and press secretary spoke for the administration when asked about the administration's position.

It seems that they both speak only for themselves and I am beginning to wonder why we need a press secretary when he only speaks for himself.

I too was confused by the remarks made by them in plain english on Sunday and Monday. They did both appear to be speaking for the administration.

I think they both should be fired if they lied about his position or should have kept their mouths shut if they had no clue.

I will remember now to ignore them both.

I am simply elated that the rule of law is not as dead as I thought when Rahm lied about prosecuting the policy makers!

I am quite happy it was all a "mix-up".

4. No dear... Look at the transcripts.... look at THE WORDS that both
Gibbs & Emmanuel used. Neither of them ever said that Obama was opposed to prosecutions.. Gibbs is better at it than Rham.

5. Rahm said it straight out - he did - I don't need the transcript I watched in shock as he spoke.
I will read them anyway. Memory is a funny thing.
But the shock was real so I watched the re-run later and I heard him say, "The president does not want them prosecuted either"

Will re-read tho as I respect your judgment.

8. Ok. . you may be right.... but the fact remains..
It is not Obama's choice to prosecute or not. It is only up to him not to obstruct.

10. I simply want justice and I am happy obstruction is off the table.
My take (after yesterday) was that The President needed our activism and letters and pressure to help him accomplish what may have been politically difficult.

By allowing surrogates to be vague (or not so vague in the case of RE) he inspired a great deal of input from folks like me who are appalled by the idea that any are held above the law.

Like FDR when he asked people to demand things of him to give him cover.

Clever if true! I hope this theory is close to correct.

9. Well, here's Rahm's words exactly:
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 02:26 PM by Lex
I asked Emanuel: "The president has ruled out prosecution for CIA officials who believed they were following the law. Does he believe that the officials who devised the policies should be immune from prosecution?"

"He believes that, look, as you saw in that statement he wrote, let's just take a step back. He came up with this and worked on this for about four weeks. Wrote that statement Wednesday night after he had made his decision and dictated what he wanted to see. And Thursday morning I saw him in the office, he was still editing it. He believes that people in good faith were operating with the guidance they were provided," Emanuel said.

What about those who devised the policy, I asked?

"Yeah, but those who devised the policy, he believes that they were, should not be prosecuted either," Emanuel said.

14. Because Rahm spoke out of turn in no indicates there was a "change of mind" on...
President Obama's part. It simply means Rahm was mistaken in his comment.
