Iraqi militias gluing anuses of gay men and inducing diarrhea to cause death.

Relying on an International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission translation of a recent Al Arabiya story, the blog Towleroad reports that Iraqi militias have been engaging in some particularly brutal tactics toward gay men in Iraq:

"A prominent Iraqi human rights activist says that Iraqi militia have deployed a painful form of torture against homosexuals by closing their anuses using 'Iranian gum.' ...Yina Mohammad told Alarabiya.net that, 'Iraqi militias have deployed an unprecedented form of torture against homosexuals by using a very strong glue that will close their anus.' According to her, the new substance 'is known as the American hum, which is an Iranian-manufactured glue that if applied to the skin, sticks to it and can only be removed by surgery. After they glue the anuses of homosexuals, they give them a drink that causes diarrhea. Since the anus is closed, the diarrhea causes death. Videos of this form of torture are being distributed on mobile cellphones in Iraq.'"

The Iraqi defense ministry reported earlier this month that six gay men were shot dead in a Shia-controlled part of Baghadad. "Two of the bodies, found on Thursday, had pieces of paper attached on which was written the word 'Pervert.'" According to the source in the Al Arabiya article, "for the past 3 weeks a crackdown on homosexuals has been going on based on a religious decree that demands their death; dozens have been targeted." The persecution "is not confined to the Shiite clerics," the source said. "Some Sunni leaders have also declared the death penalty for sodomy on satellite channels."

40. It's not their reporting, though.
They're just translating something that Al Arabia reported, sourced to this one particular activist--and we don't know how reliable that is or how much of it might be based on rumor.

30. It would be a much more comfortable
world for all of us if we could just dismiss atrocities as "hopefully not true."

Do the American troops not have any control over the Iraqi militia? I'm not being snarky, I really don't know.

That there are few things in life that throw me for a loop or truly enlighten or disturb me. I was wrong. This is the most utterly disgusting display of human behavior that I have ever had the displeasure of reading. And, I am fairly certain that this planet would be much better off when we're gone. To both the perpetrators of this heinous act and the world leaders who have ALL looked the other way, I have nothing more to say to you. This is inexcusable, unconscionable, and intolerable. Fuck you all.

Perhaps your headline should not be so graphic. I care about the torture issue, but that doesn't mean I need to know about hte specifics.

15. A new technology but an old torture
Superglue is not necessary. Closing up the rectum as a lethal punishment -- using lower-tech glues, resins, plugs, and sewing -- goes back quite some time.

Some of the forms of torture that we humans have invented are beyond belief.

16. Have you even seen that touring exhibit of the torture devices?
Some of the displays included the drawings, plans and instruction manuals. I couldn't then and still can't get my head around the mind that would not only conceive such a thing, but then actually go do it.

The other thing that was very notable is how many of the devices and techniques were used to ensure belief in the correct deity.

19. No, I didn't know there was one
People seem to have had a different mindset when it came to pain. Women routinely died horribly in labor, prisoners were often tortured daily for years, infanticide and child rape was universal, surgery was performed without anesthetic (there was actually a fairly effective anesthetic available, called dwale, but it was little used), and cruelty in daily life was routine.

You may also want to consider the writings of Alice Miller and Lloyd De Mause on abusive child-raising practices, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. Philippe Aries' Centuries of Childhood is also valuable; it is one of the foundations of DeMause's work in what he terms "psychohistory".

Michel Foucault's major work, Discipline and Punish, is an excellent anthropological/philosophical work on punishment and torture; he also discusses the development of childhood as an institution.

We live in a kinder age than we are accustomed to thinking. We at least do not inflict pain for our emotional satisfaction -- not routinely, anyway.

33. I haven't even heard of that exhibit - I don't really understand wanting to gawk at that
The same for a show that has been on the History Channel - Surviving History http://www.history.com/minisites/surviving-history

It is basically a history of torture and torture devices. I just do not understand the fascination with knowing the minutiae of something that perverted.

I DO want to know when the perversion is happening, especially when it is being done in the name of my country or by people we were supposed to be "liberating" and teaching to be "more like us." If the perversion of the kind of torture described in the OP is being done by people we put in power, I am appalled and disgusted even more than I have been by the aholes who were in charge of the invasion of Iraq.

Find the people responsible for this (if "people" is even an applicable term for them anymore), try them, and execute them. Also, hunt down the clerics who've been advocating this (even if they're outside of Iraq) and execute them as well.
