FUBAR 24 hours. Bad night last night and an emergency root canal this morning.
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 08:07 PM by DemoTex
I slept not one wink last night. Bad #31 molar (with new temporary cap), bad storms, and a freaked-out dog (Nick). Plus the fact that Dr. DemoTex had a 04:15 wake-up for a flight to Chicago. I sat at the computer all night (maybe you saw my great bamboo structures post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5493854 (first posted at 01:31 AM EDT)).

The Percodan (from my regular dentist) didn't even scratch the pain last night. Advil did better. At 8 AM the endodonist's office (my consultation appointment was 4/27) called and said they had an opening for the consultation. I told them my woes, and by 10 AM I was in the chair for a root canal. It went well, but the endodontist told me to expect a rough afternoon and next few days. He gave me a stronger pain medication.

At 7:30 PM he (the endodontist) called me at home to check up on me. He has done that before. I am impressed! He re-iterated that he observed a lot of inflammation and that the pain might be around for a few days.

Actually, the pain has abated .. mostly. It has been my second worst dental experience (nothing to do with the great endodontist), the first being my double wisdom tooth extraction in Viet Nam.

3. oy
the first being my double wisdom tooth extraction in Viet Nam.

Now THAT"S fucked up! bad enough you had to go to Viet Nam, you do mean in the war, right? The reason I ask is because a friend of mine and her husband recently went to Vietnam for three weeks, part of which was spent having major dental work at a fraction of the price it would cost here. They also come from there, so that helped, though I think it's rather brave to go back considering the circumstances under which they left.

5. During the war, indeed.
It was November 1970, in Nha Trang.

4. I had a double wisdom tooth extraction, not in Vietnam, though.
I tried to steal the big huge cannister of happy gas. I wasn't even bothered by the footprint on my chest.

I misread the dosage of the pills and took double doses by mistake. It was a good thing that didn't approach lethal amounts, I guess.

I slept for three days, though, and when I woke up, the worst was over...! I hate the dentist. Whatchagonna do? Ya gotta go...!

9. Feeling for you.
I had 2 abscesses last year, one was pretty bad two 7.5mg vicodin bad, the other never bothered me at all. It had ruptured out into the gum line, the dentist said that kept the pressure from building. I've had some very painful procedures done and some bad injuries with painful surgeries to fix them and the bad abscess definitely ranks in the top 10, probably top 5. Hope they gave you some vicodin or something close and hoping you feel better.

David

11. Hang in there, kiddo.
I had my first (and hopefully only!) root canal last summer. The post-surgical pain was sooooo much less than the pre-surgery agony. In two days I was down to using extra strength Tylenol.

(The downside -- a week later the tooth cracked, before the appointment to put on the permanent cap. So at that appointment, the dentist extracted my tooth, installed a temporary bridge, etc., etc., etc. But still, no tooth pain compared to the pre-surgery pain!)

It will get better -- I promise.
