I'd love to see this spread all around the world. It's Al Gore's birthday today. Maybe we should all give him this gift: a pledge to ask our city officials to join forces with other cities on a given date to do likewise.

Somebody better at math than I am could probably figure out what an hour of downtime worldwide would mean to the reduction in greenhouse gases.

2. By the way, we can participate in our own time zones by turning off our lights at 7:30 pm.

3. Once? Come on.
How about 7pm - 9pm every Tuesday? ;) Light a few candles, read a story & relax with the ones you love.

4. It begins with an hour, but the goal is much bigger.
You are thinking as the the organizers are.

5. It was impressive
I walked up to the hill at Sydney Park (about 10 minures from home), where you get a nice panoramic view of the City and the airport and the southern and eastern suburbs -- and you could barely see the skyscrapers of the City and North Sydney against the sky, a very different picture from when I went up there to see the comet a few weeks ago. Though the street lights were still on, which rather detracted from the effect, there certainly appeared to be many fewer lights on in the houses and blocks of flats around the park. With the almost-full moon the streets didn't seem any darker than usual for walking.

Should have gone up to be there at 7:30 to watch the lights being turned off -- I didn't arrive till after 8 -- but I stayed on till about 8:45 to see them come on again. Surprisingly, while a lot of the red and blue neon signs on top of the office buildings in North Sydney and around the airport came back on about 7:35, I only saw two on the city skyscrapers. I left wondering if the building owners had decided to leave them off for longer or even all night, but haven't been able to find any news on-line about that.

I turned off everything for an hour last night and will continue to do so every day. I think it would be great if everyone wrote to their city councils to ask their towns to do this on Earth Day and then institute it on a regular basis. I intend to do so. Thanks for this thread.
