New York Catholics favor gay marriage; Protestants oppose (most NYers favor)

Looks like NY is close to being the first state to Legislate gay rights, with the support of a clear majority of citizens.

These poll results must be a shock and a disappointment to New York's bishops!

As I've said before, the hierarchy doesn't speak for most Catholics anymore, on a variety of issues.

By a margin of 53 percent to 39 percent, respondents to the Siena College Research Institute poll believe the Senate should pass a measure introduced by Gov. David A. Paterson to let gays marry. Eight percent were unsure or had no opinion.

The Siena poll found support for gay marriage rights among Democrats, women, Catholics, Jews, and residents of New York City, the downstate suburbs and, by a 50 to 40 percent margin, those living upstate. It was backed most heavily by independents and those age 18 to 34, a subgroup that favored the right by a 71 to 20 percent margin.

Those most likely to oppose the gay marriage bill were males, blacks, Protestants and those over age 55. Republicans, by a 59 to 31 percent margin, were most opposed among the various subgroups, the poll found.

1. Odd, it seems that many Catholics are open minded these days regardless of the Vatican's opinion
And I still don't get why African Americans tend to vote against gay marriage. :/ really? c'mon.

3. For decades, Catholics tended to be Democrats.
It was during Reagan's time that the term "Reagan Democrats" came to being, and after that Catholics tended to be a swing vote.

Looks like they're swinging closer to their roots again.

2. If the poll had shown that NY Catholics opposed it, your post would have dozens of responses...
...and would have been voted up to the front page in minutes.

4. Well, you could help it get there!
And you're right . . . a lot of people here look for excuses to slam Catholics.
