Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 08:34 PM by Stinky The Clown
Even the popular topics have a bunch of critics.

Everything seems to devolve into a flame war lately.

Everybody's so much smarter than everybody else.

Everybody's nostril flare wider than everybody else's.

How about my lumbago? Is that a safe topic?

On edit ...... why is everyone so S*E*N*S*I*T*I*V*E?

I'd like to see a second attempt at that one without naming particular states, but going for a more general hypothetical discussions about states in general, since the first one fell apart.

45. That one was an exampple of the respondants running the train off the track, not the OP
*BUT* ..... a lot of the responses were hypersensitive about an issue important to them that was clearly not important to others.

And I understand that happens.

And I understand we ought to be sensitive to that if we can.

But without a daily list of "Topics That Will Piss Off Some People" ya just can't keep up with it all.

And then there are the related topics that bring out the people LOOKING to fight.

Mention Sarah Palin's ...... I dunno ....... hair style (as just an example) and suddenly you could hear about how Alaska's residents are dissed by the larger community and other will say it is because they elected her and others will say there are plenty of good progressives in Alaska and some will say well if you're so good, why is she the governor and they'll say ..... and they'll say ...... and it gets locked.

Some people are actually LOOKING to get outraged and manufacture it when it isn't there.

On the other hand, there are OPs a-plenty intended to do exactly that ....... piss off people.

I don't have an answer ...... wish I did .... but I don't.

We won, now we can throw out the impure and the DINOs, right?

And then the hard feelings get in the way when we need to unite again and we get our butts handed to us again until we have to come together.

It's a cycle, nothing more.

60. I found a way to avoid that
I exercise self control and don't click into threads that offer me no appeal.

Or seem destined to piss me off by either the participants/original author ...... or subject matter.

My BP's down 20 points as a result of that.

Y'oughtta try it.

I also think that if I can't give a string of words that begin to resemble actual sentience, I skip replying at all ..... things like ":)" and "LOL" arr hardly the stuff of discourse and often get read wrong, leading to people being pissed off. Leading to the topic of this entire thread.

Its like .... some days, you're just part of the problem and not the solution.

Unless that's your goal. To be a pest, I mean. If ya wanna be a pest, that's a pretty good way to do it safe from being locked or pizzaed.

But I don't wanna be a pest. Controversial, maybe. Provocative, sure. But not a pest. Nobody likes pests.

33. Well, was talking about poetry I write rofl
Here is one, and I am no keats (and I love the poem you posted):

Captured hearts

Part 1
My Josephine

Floating like an apparition from a dream I saw you
Across the saloon on the stairwell
A moment in time my lady I shall not forget
The sight of you has done what no man has ever
It stopped this beating heart

Outlaws, guns, bullets I have lived by
Fear and a racing heart for the weak
For where I have been
A weak heart becomes death

The look of you, My sweet Josephine
Standing there alone looking down at me
Was like that of an Angel
Coming to take the dying man home
A sweetness the taste of which I have never known

Had the site of you come to me in battle
I would surely have died
AS my very being stopped
My concentration given over solely
To staring at this vision before me

I have seen the greatest evil in men
Felt the wind of bullets near me
And never have I wavered
Never, Oh Josephine, Until now

I have come here, to my home this night
And found myself unable to think of anything
But you
And so I write of you, to you
Until the cock crows if need be
And even then I suspect I shall leave much unsaid

I liken my passion for you like the hunt of a posse
I shall not be satiated so long as you remain free
And out of my grasp
I shall spare nothing to find you
To have you

May God have mercy on this man
I pray that I shall find you again this evening
And that this letter has found your heart
Until then my sweet….

-Wyatt

Part 2

Starry Night

Dry desert night winds slid across the prairies
As a horse draws near another rider
She sits alone near a creek
Tethered to a tree, waiting

Long flowing Gown revealing her to the moon
She watches him approach
This lawman, badge glimmering in the dim light
IN her hand, her heart, clutched a letter

He sees her
And stops
The horse prances nervously
Feeling his heart racing
Knowing his movements from many battles
The horse prepares

A moment passes
“Josephine”
A whisper to no one
But she hears
They stare at each other
Neither moving

Approaching Hoofbeats
Shouts
Two deputies ride to him
A murder
Trouble in town
He nods and they ride off

He watches them
Uncertain
Turning to her, her name escapes his lips
A tone of empathy
Smiling she shakes her hair out
Face caught in the moonlight
Body revealed quietly beneath her gown
Cocking her head to see him better she whispers
“Go my Wyatt…”

Heart pounding in rage he pulls on the reins
And rushes off to town
Hell to pay for someone
The sound of the hooves
Does not drown out the beating of his heart
And he knows
He is deep in love
With Josephine

Part 3
Letter from Josephine

My dear Wyatt
How it gladdened my heart to see you
Though brief was our encounter
I remember it as I remember you
Such a Handsome man you are My Wyatt

Does it interest you Lawman that I am alone
As I write this to you?
Dressed as I was when you left
Feeling the need to pull you near to me
And hold you

My hand trembles across this paper
As a cool wind blows into my window
Why have you not come to me?
Why Lawman, do you fear me
I have no gun
No desire to harm you

I am called from below
So I must take my leave
I hope this finds you
My Wyatt

-Josephine

Part 4
Together

Sitting alone and tired in his tent he ponders
And rages
Why did I not stay that night?
And he thinks of the dead man outside
And sighs

A horse approaches
And stops
Stepping into the night, a deputy sits on his horse
Folded letter in his hands
The scent of a woman drifts to him
Taking the note he retreats again inside

Candle light dances across the paper
The smell of her
He reads

Commotion as he bursts from his tent
People awaken and look
Hastily dressed, gun belt on shoulder
He rides

Hoofbeats pound as does his heart
Town draws nearer
And he prods the horse on
Faster
And like the wind he rides
To Josephine

Darkened town
All sleep well
AS their lawman rides the night
The horse stops hard in front of the saloon
His heart pounds

Leaping down he races in
And stops in the darkness
His feet carry him to the stairs
Those stairs
Where first he beheld her beauty

Rushing up them
To her door
To her
And stops as his hand touches the door knob
What if?
Someone else?

Anger flaring
And hurt
He leans back and kicks the door hard
It gives and slams open
A candles protests and flickers
Another goes out
A wisp of smoke rises and dances

Gun in hand he stares in
As she sits up alarmed in bed
Alone
For a moment neither moves
Slowly the gun goes away

The passion inside him explodes
He rushes in to her
To her arms
To his Josephine

They embrace hard
He and His Josephine
And he swears to her then
To never let her go
His Josephine

38. Love this Keats also.
Fame, like a wayward girl, will still be coy
To those who woo her with too slavish knees,
But makes surrender to some thoughtless boy,
And dotes the more upon the heart at ease;
She is gipsy, will not speak to those
Who have not learnt to be content without her;
A jilt, whose ear was never whispered close,
Who thinks they scandal her who talk about her -
A very gipsy is she, Nilus-born,
Sister-in-law to jealous Potiphar.
Ye lovesick bards! repay her scorn for scorn;
Ye artists lovelorn! madmen that ye are,
Make your best bow to her and bid adieu -
Then, if she likes it, she will follow you.

32. Here you go...
Fill for me a brimming bowl
And let me in it drown my soul:
But put therein some drug, designed
To banish Woman from my mind:
For I want not the stream inspiring
That heats the sense with lewd desiring,
But I want as deep a draught
As e'er from Lethe's waves was quaffed;
From my despairing breast to charm
The Image of the fairest form
That e'er my revelling eyes beheld,
That e'er my wandering fancy spelled.

'Tis vain! away I cannot chase
The melting softness of that face,
The beaminess of those bright eyes,
That breast - earth's only Paradise.

My sight will never more be blessed;
For all I see has lost its zest:
Nor with delight can I explore
The Classic page, the Muse's lore.

Had she but known how beat my heart,
And with one smile relieved its smart,
I should have felt a sweet relief,
I should have felt 'the joy of grief'.
Yet as a Tuscan 'mid the snow
Of Lapland thinks on sweet Arno,
Even so for ever shall she be
The Halo of my Memory.

89. I hear ya. Baseball has taken quite a few hits lately. When I was a
wee lad it was still the national sport and kids played it on sandlots and in parks every night after school, weather permitting.

They still do that in Cuba and other countries.

Nothing quite as good ever replaced baseball in the U.S., IMO. Kranepool is kind of a saint of that bygone era.

101. He signed with the Mets (the Big Club) when he was like 15 or 16.
Most of the team were old war horses the team (foolishly) drafted in the expansion.

Kranepool was the odd man out, in many ways. Young and hungry. But also kinda slow. A real mediocre guy.

Lovable and all. But mediocre.

The guy who had the full time at his position **finally** got sent down to Triple A and Edd gets the gig.

A year later, Ed's in Triple A.

At age 19.

The Daily News (I think it was) ran a now famous headline: "Is Kranepool washed up?"

I always found that funny. At 19, who can possibly be 'washed up'?

137. Washed up at 19. I did not know that story. Kranepool in Triple A at 19.
I had no idea.

Old-timey Reds fans still sing the praises of Joe Nuxhall, a left-hander for them who evidently was signed at 15 o 16 or so. Something like that.

It had to have been a charge for Kranepool and Nuxhall to be on the train with these older players barrelling down the tracks for Wrigley and Candlestick and all the other older parks. When I was 15, I doubt I could have found the left side of my own ass with a 3-way mirror.

Thank you for that tale. Much appreciated.

66. Some think that judging people constantly is a contribution.
I have a BIL like that. He armchair critiques, unasked, and pretends that's so valuable that then he doesn't need to actually do his share of doing anything. And his "directing" is absurd to boot... he doesn't know his head from a hole in the ground about any subject... but he damn sure has to get his way about what others are doing, or he throws a spazz fit and disrupts anything else. He's a baby in a man-suit.

Some here remind of him, a lot.

This is an agora, kinda. People should defend they shit in public and stop crying that some group of folks disagree with them. Yes, some people will disagree. That's the point of standing up and making an argument. What's the problem with that?

Why are people scared of disagreement?

Some business person you got an E-mail from had some Christain mumbo-jumbo in an E-mail signature that was causing you distress...and you're talking about other people being sensative?

I think pretty much any topic can be discussed on DU. Some seem to be more reactionary than others and it's pretty clear which ones those are (they tend to have the most posts).

93. See .... you're a prime example .......
That thread's OP **in its entirety* reads:

How would you react if you got a business e-mail signed with the phrase ......

..... "IN HIS SERVICE" all in caps, above the person's name?

It doesn't say I go it. In fact, I didn't get that e-mail. Someone else did and passed it on to me. The OP makes no statement of outrage. In fact, it implies no reaction whatsoever.

But YOU .... you were all OVER that thread, making assumptions of facts not in evidence and then debating them as if it mattered.

I brought up something to DISCUSS ..... and YOU chose to get all outraged about it. And now YOU choose to drag it in here and flog it all over again.

Who has the (he) problem here ... you (hehe) or (HAAAhahaha) me?
