I remember those old movies. Japan getting all jacked up by a huge dinosaur, or saved by it sometimes.
Used to read a newspaper called The Monster Times I would get at a five and dime in Byesville, Ohio.
It did not matter what the hell was going on in Japan, the only important thing to people when Godzilla was putting a hurt on them was him. They came together, put aside differences, and worked to fight the problem.
9/11 reminded me of Godzilla. For a brief moment in time politics seemed to be off the table, and folks from both sides of the aisle, even if for a day, got along.
It happens on a smaller scale as well, you know that thing people call the new shiny object of the day or week. That something we can all focus on and discuss.
Because sometimes we want a break from all the bad shit going on, and we get battle fatigue from the day in and day out of trying to keep our country free, getting health care for all, etc and so on.
I have been on DU long enough to know that what is raging today on here won't be a week later. But I honestly don't see that as a bad thing.
It is what keeps me coming back here. We have common themes that never die, common issues we discuss seven ways to Sunday (guns, iraq, breastfeeding while smoking and twittering at the olive garden, etc) and we will never lose sight of the issues important to us.
Sometimes it is Godzilla that stomps through. Sometimes just the news of the day.
But it is always entertaining and often helps folks get through the problems they may be facing day to day. Things you can't do jack about.
I'll take GD as it is.
