to have the emphasis on her eyes and not her brows. Eyes are expressive —eyebrows are not.

Edited to add: Makeup, etc. is used for a reason, you know.

It's no different than perming hair or having different hair styles throughout you life, or wearing the right underwear (like bras and spanx). Men shave or have moustaches or beards they trim. What's the difference?

If Boyle doesn't want to that's fine too. But you're trying to make it into some oppression thing. Do you comb your hair? Take a bath? shave? Then you're messing with nature.

And in her case her eye/brows are affected by the oxygen deficiency too.

When all she has left to love her is her cat?

She doesn't just want to sing. She wants the singing to bring her love and admiration and respect and a warm welcome wherever she goes. And money would be nice.

And I do think it will now.

I know I want to know the exact date her first album is released.

15. I'll answer that for you.
Because women have a social obligation to do their best to meet porn standards before inflicting themselves on the general public - whether they are singing, commuting to work, or walking to the store to pick up a sack of potatoes. It's their JOB, as women, to look available and desirable to men.

We have makeup for a reason, you know. (and there's a reason men aren't required to wear it at normal social functions)

ugh.

(Thank you for the attempt - I'm discouraged that your first response to the OP was what it was.)

We must meet the porn standard, or else. And the porn standard says: Be skinny and smooth and hairless as a boy. Only with big pneumatic boobs. But don't confine them in a bra. You'll get cancer. (:puke:)

That seventies look was a derivation on the 1920's Flapper. In fact, many normal women embraced that look as freeing from the bound and starched look of the fifties and mod styles of the 60's.

Not talking about unbound and unstarched but the cheesy kitsch that looks contrived for the male gaze, not what normal women would embrace on their own.

38. Nothing wrong with being realistic
I'm not physically beautiful and I don't go around thinking I am. I don't go around thinking about it much at all. I just look like I do. There are some things people just find attractive - symmetry, straight teeth, good skin, the v-shape in men and the hip to waist ratio in women, etc. Other than Borat and Zohan, I bet we can't get anyone to truthfully say they find her to be really physically beautiful (no reference to her soul which may be beautiful or her voice which is)

I'm sure she'll get some good makeup and some more flattering clothing, but she's not going to look like Mariah Carey and she shouldn't try to. She should just sing.

46. Ms. Boyle is aces in my book!!!
It's a tough thing to do...

There's a band of "professional" musicians on DU who have stated I only like her singing because of her frumpy looks-- very, very shallow thinking they implied to me. There's another band of posters that tell me the show has devolved my taste, and the only reason we like her singing is because we're shallow and easily manipulated by the "corporate meritocracy" (or some term like that which would get me kicked out of a retirement center Scrabble game...)

So be it. I really enjoyed the number she performed, and I thought she performed it very, very well. Much better than the performances of our "professional" musicians and their anti-talent show allies (oh, that's right-- you guys haven't been "discovered" yet-- so I couldn't have seen your performances unless I visit some dive you payed to play at-- so sorry, my apologies).

But then again... I'm shallow! :P Ms. Boyle is aces in my book!!!

Let's face it, she would not have become such an instant worldwide sensation if not for the perceived contrast between her appearance and her singing voice. If she had been younger and conventionally attractive, I don't think she would have garnered so much attention.

63. Agreed. And if you will, then post your photo so we can all see how "perfect" you are.

65. Leave this lady alone. She is fine as she is.
Why does everything have to be based on good looks? I had been blessed with great looks in my younger years, but I found that being beautiful doesn't mean shit unless you have other talents. But now, in my later years, my successes have been because I also had a brain.

82. Well, not to be glib, but starting a thread regarding her appearance IS bringing it up.

78. She should dress and look as SHE wants to look--her own look
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 07:05 PM by hlthe2b
I think she is very endearing and sincere. She'd be marvelous in so many Broadway roles...

Those who want to change her--- Can anyone argue with this famous vocalists style?

I dare say no one would say Queen Aretha should change one iota! ;)

80. Today on the Ron and Fez show (on XM radio) some caller called Uma Thurman ugly.

So you can see how far we've fallen, how insane, pathetic and unrealistic our tastes have become.

Uma Thurman ugly?

I'd like to see what this guy looks like.

84. Physical beauty and an amazing voice have no relation to one another.
and never have. Many of the greatest voices in opera have belonged to people who were rather odd-looking.

Occasionally you find both in the same package, but mostly what is sold in the pop world is a pretty woman with a light, wispy voice enhanced by studio trickery. There are some exceptions, but not many.
