Any DU "Long Timers" remember when we split with "Daily Kos" website and Markos?
I notice that the "Kos" Website gets few posts here in the past year or so. But, the posts from there are always serious and well grouned in research that many DU'ers seem to read. See same thing with "Buzzflash, Eschaton, Crooks & Liars, Media Matters, The Nation, BartCop, TPM, Digby and FIREDOGLAKE."

Is DU just morphing to "new sites" in it's transformation to go with the New Media Flow, or did some rift take place with these websites?

1. I discovered Buzzflash
when all they had were links to a few editorials here and there in the struggling left wing press. I discovered DU when their first "Top Ten" was linked at Buzzflash.

I've read the others sporadically, but DU and Buzzflash remain my main sites.

"Media Whores Online" was my other prime site, may it rest in piece and its anonymous creator be raking in a huge salary somewhere.

5. Yeah...some good days with "MHO" and early "BUZZ."
Everything changes...it has to...but good to remember that...especially "Media Whores Online."

Did we ever figure out who ran that site? It always seemed a mystery ...to this day?

19. That was my path too - top ten at buzzflash
And the Media Horse, loved that one. It was my introduction to everything I now know.

2. Seems that some would rather quote "Politico" these days.
And usually its the same crowd that sound like NRA lobbyists if you question their "gun rights", call you a "PUMA" if you disagree with even one thing Obama has done, and think that some pirates getting killed is a reason to celebrate.

8. If I know a link is to Politico I do my damndest to avoid it.
I hate that right wing fake ass site. They are given way to much recognition by the *MSM* and I will not click on any links people post on DU or anyplace else.

15. And which well regulated militia do you belong to?
Actually, the militia of 1776 would be the equivalent of the National Guard today.

Truth is, I have no problem with sane, law biding adults owning a reasonable number of non-assault weapon firearms if they so choose. I just don't care for NRA right wing fringe talking points being posted at DEMOCRATIC Underground.

3. I still see posts with links to those sites...
(not sure about Bartcop). I think there may be fewer links to them because there are so many more blogs, forums, etc, to choose from than there were back when I joined DU (end of 2002).

6. They all did great ground work that helped organize the movement to get Dems like Obama
elected.

Good Days with them...really.

7. Yes, they did great work, still do...

I still go to firedoglake, KOS, Crooks & Liars, Media Matters, TPM, usually because of links here. I haven't been to Buzzflash for quite a while, I should check them out again.

The sites you listed(and including DU) were, to me at least, pioneers in the internet fight against bush and the repubs.

Edited to fix typo.

9. Not sure what you mean
Daily KOS started off as more of blog-type site with a small number of regular poster (or "diarists").

Eschaton, C&L, TPM, Digby and FDL were typically pure blogs with "authors" who were more like aggregators of all the "underground" news and an active commenting community.

Bartcop, however was (and is) in a category all his own. Same with the late, lamented "Media Whores Online" (love that flashing light).

DU, however is a full-blown discussion board - member driven for the most part and NOT blog-like at all in that we have "moderators" and "admins" instead of "authors" with definite points of view.

I guess what I'm saying is that we're all sort of diverging into our niches.

It's not like a major ideological schism, just a different format.

14. Kos is a flake and an egomaniac
His sole credential is founding the web site. He doesn't break stories or really do anything productive. He'd rather sit around, make embarassing comments that reflect poorly on all Democrats, and engage in silly conspiracy theories about the DLC being some sort of political Illuminati.

I'll take Josh Marshall any day. He has done some tremendous reporting on congressional corruption.

17. I know seveal egomaniacs
some I like a lot. But, whatever he is, he is not a flake and he's founded far more than a website. He's helped promote some amazing contemporary thinkers, has created a good format for legislative and electoral action, and, if nothing else, the creation of Congress Matters is an excellent tool for keeping track of our government. And he makes no such silly claims about the DLC (straw-man much?). It is true he has little respect for the DLC but unlike some who like to peddle in baseless smears, he offers up examples to bolster his criticism. By the way, I find Markos too conservative for my tastes.

That you would compare DKos to TPM is odd. They are totally different animals. DKos is a blog, TPM is not. TPM hires journalists, DKos does not.

18. In the old "Gateway" sci fi series
the Hee Chee melded the memories and life experiences of their departed into a communal database they called the "Massed Minds". All the knowledge of the entire species reposed in that data bank, and any problem could be solved, any question answered, and any request for information granted instantaneously because of the sheer volume of experience and knowledge contained in that population. That's how I look at DU, and that's why I check here for breaking news and commentary several times daily. A good example would be airline disasters-within minutes, our resident commercial pilots and experts are online, providing expertise from their point of view. Legal matters are explained by experts in minutes, and a number of dedicated wire watchers delight in posting breaking news "hot off the presses". Unfortunately, the modus operandi of discussions, now, seems to be "argue with a fence post" variety. Many discussions turn ugly quickly, for no apparent reason. Some posters just seem so inherently unhappy that they just like to fight, and one quickly learns which discussions (and Posters) to avoid. All in all, though-I get enough information and entertainment from DU to be a monthly contributor. The only other site I still support? The afore-mentioned and oft maligned Bartcop, whom I consider to be a voice crying in the wilderness. He is bitingly clever, remarkably insightful, and dead on on almost everything. His white hot rage seems to have cooled somewhat with age and infirmity, but his wisdom is true and his humor is unparalleled. I agree with him about Markos-too difficult to navigate, and way too much money coming in. I miss the old Horse tremendously-the Horse led me to DU. I still check in with Atrios. He seems to have good sources. And I really like Hoffmania-he's just a good guy with some good commentary. So, I dont really see DU morphing, just growing ever larger and ever more diverse.

20. But much of our knowledge here...still, sometimes, comes from "out there" in the diversity of
experience...

Notice I said...sometimes.
