Hot off the presses: THC kills brain tumors
one more pebble drops onto the decriminalization rockpile:

http://www.jci.org/articles/view/37948

"These findings describe a mechanism by which THC can promote the autophagic death of human and mouse cancer cells and provide evidence that cannabinoid administration may be an effective therapeutic strategy for targeting human cancers."

10. I have a friend who has been diagnosed with a Teddy Kennedy style
brain tumor.

It's looking "iffy." Too soon to say, really, but the chemo/radiation is doing a real number. Sometimes that stage, they say, makes it look worse than it is.

Hard to know until the course of chemicals and zapping is done, and the doctor rules, but... you know.

They oughta just legalize and tax that stuff. It'd probably wipe out Bush's deficit in a year....and persuade a lot of people that "family farming" is a good business to get into!

14. all the best to your friend.
One of my projects addresses this disease (glioblastoma multiforme). It's hideously aggressive. There are a couple of exciting clinical trials out there. One is a vaccine that was so successful last yer that they stopped the phase 2 trial and accelerated the wok into phase 3 to speed it to market. Jury's still out, but the trial should have several hundred patients. Might be worth looking into it at the NCI clinical trials website:

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00643097?term=glioblastoma+vaccine&rank=2

18. Same here...
I had a pre-op checkup done a few weeks ago.. the nurse said it was the "best EKG she'd seen in a long time". My blood pressure was 110/80.. and I quit taking my blood pressure medicine over a year ago. I've also been able to quit taking anti-depressants, xanax for anxiety and pain pills for my chronic pain since being in a disabling accident in 2003... yet I'm a criminal and a "stoner" for using marijuana for its medicinal properties.

:hi:

This "finding" is not new however. The first research showing this was in 1974. 1974! Many people in the US oppose legalization of cannabis because they think it's all about smoking a joint legally and getting high. It's not the smoking cannabis that stops the cancer, it's ingesting it in enough of a concentration that stops the cancer and preserves healthy cells in our body. THC is available, synthetically and is used for symptoms related to chemo treatment. The scientists from the drug companies are trying to manufacture all the cannabinoids and THC so they can patent and make money when all it would take is make it legal to grow in a controlled environment, do the research and use the plant to make an affordable medicine for all to have without the strings of patents and pharmaceuticals. I hope I see this in my lifetime, but sadly, I doubt it.

12. You're welcome, pls read the article next time
As one of the capitalist pig scientists you mention, I'll just ignore your misunderstanding of the larger situation and focus on clarifying the scientific significance of this article:

1. Articles don't get published in the JCI unless they break significant new scientific ground.

2. The novelty and relevance of the new finding is that there is now a clearer molecular understanding of HOW cannabis does what people previously observed viz tumoricidal activity. Autophagy is a hot field right now, and it's modulation offers an entirely new avenue for cncer resarch. That THC modulates it is a bonus for cannabis researchers and Deadheads alike.

3. You are correct about the dose/response relationship of THC and cancer killing. Although this study used d9 THC injections into the tumor itself, the discussion of the paper clearly points out that the tumor THC concentrations used in the study are achievable through peripheral ingestion (smoking, eating, injection). Again, significance and relevance get you published in the JCI.

4. Although cannabis does contain many congeners (chemical varieties) of THC, d9 THC was shown here to be sufficient for the anti-cancer effect. This won't make anyone money though, since Nabilone (pharmaceuticl grade d9 THC) has been on the market since the 1980's and is available as a generic all over the world. I know b/c I played a small role in it's development as an anti-emetic for chemotherapy. Yes, I'm old.

Have a good day all, I'm off to generate more unnecessary intellectual property and make some money trying to cure cancer.

I've been enjoying my Mary Jane for over 25 years....Beyond the fact that it keeps me level headed, it appears to be good for a bunch of other diseases. Good.
