AP to Aggregators: We Will Sue You

Bye bye DU and others?

-----------------------

The Associated Press board voted Monday to “pursue legal and legislative actions” against aggregators who use content without permission, a new shot across the bow of internet news sites in the war over how little use is “fair use.”

The AP named no potential targets, yet speculation immediately turned to Google. While the search giant pays the AP to host full versions of wire service stories, it generally does not have contracts with AP member newspapers whose headlines it also aggregates on its news portal. The AP has also made no bones about pursuing individual bloggers, as it did the Drudge Retort last June.

Part of the initiative will be to “develop a system to track content distributed online to determine if it is being legally used” and new AP-controlled search pages.

2. Wow, AP Is Really Plunging Into A Death Spiral
This sort of reactionary, lashing out will only make them more and more irrelevant, and I say, good. They suck and have become more and more of a propoganda outlet anyway.

3. Well, I'll link Reuters, AFP, etc. instead.
The AP seems to think they're something mighty special, but their "reporting" gets worse everyday.

6. Do they think this will save their pathetic asses? Considering
that the AP was totally useless during the last admin. they should be grateful that anyone uses them as a citation for anything at all.

7. Hasn't there just been a state surpeme court decision

on the "fair use" and copyright issue that basically took the opposite stance of AP?
Anyone know what I'm talking about? tryin' to find it right now.

8. The Fair Use rule cited at nolo.com
makes it apparent that DU and it's posters are within the law, as only a portion of any given article is quoted, proper credit is always given, a link is always provided to the original article, and articles are quoted for the purpose of critical discussion.

9. And they want to prevent people from reading their stuff, why?
yet another reason why the AP is vanishing down the hole they have dug themselves.
