Oh "My Sweet Lord"! The shocking continuing war on Christians.
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 11:08 AM by Tinksrival

The six-foot (1.8m) sculpture, entitled "My Sweet Lord", depicts Jesus Christ naked on the cross.

Catholic League head Bill Donohue called it "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever".

The sculpture, by artist Cosimo Cavallaro, will be displayed from Monday at Manhattan's Lab Gallery.

The Catholic League, which describes itself as the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organization, also criticized the timing of the exhibition.

"The fact that they chose Holy Week shows this is calculated, and the timing is deliberate," Mr Donohue said.

He called for a boycott of the gallery and the hotel which houses it.

The Lab gallery's Matt Semler is unrepentant.

"If we wanted to shock we could have exhibited 20,000 photos of consecrated priests, bishops, cardinals and popes busted for child molesting since 1900."

The exhibition opens on Monday.

No boycott against this country leading an illegal war and the killing of thousands but they need to boycott a chocolate jesus?

That whole 20,000 thing. Let's get Matt and Donohue in a boxing ring together.

trying to figure out what has Donohues 'panties in a wad' - I don't get it unless it is simply a way to keep sending out fund-raising pleas to the fools who open their wallets to keep him in business.

4. Jesus probably would have been crucified naked
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 11:07 AM by nxylas
Are the "Christian sensibilities" Donohue mentions the ones that give him a tasteful little loincloth in the paintings, statues and crucifixes found in Catholic churches? Because it's OK to show someone being brutally executed as long as you don't see his weiner.

31. Agreed, the weiner is an issue. Plus, where are
the slavvering Jews? Hardly fair and balanced in their absence.

5. Bill Donohue can kiss my ass
I may have to make a trip to Manhattan during Easter weekend to check it out, if it pisses off Donohue so much the better.

6. Donohue is a tool
What offends him so much??

What makes this so different from the huge hanging 'Jesus on the Cross' depictions in almost every Catholic church I've ever been to??

Is it because it's chocolate??

My first thought when I saw it was that the artist might have been making some kind of statement re: chocolate bunnies, etc.. that we see at Easter time.

They DO love their manufactured outrage, don't they?

7. That artist is right on!
With his reply and the art itself. The idea that Jesus during the crucifixion somehow was fully clothed, possibly in snow white stain repellent glowing white robes is ridiculous and stupid. We're talking Roman empire here.

37. the comeback was not only great, but completely appropriate. To add to what you said,
I think the idea of a chocolate crucified Jesus is appropriate around this time period, considering all the chocolate rabbits and eggs and whatever else to "celebrate" Jesus's crucifixion.

Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 11:11 AM by tularetom
Ask your good buddy Mel Gibson, Donohue. Fuck Bill Donohue and his asshole catholic league. I don't want to hear anything moral from the mouths of these pervs until they have cleaned up their act. Even though I think they are still deep in denial mode.

Sculpture = depiction of crucifiction of Christ.

10. Donohue needs to clarify. What assaults his sensibilities? That it's nude?
That's it chocolate? The title?

I hope anyone living in NYC, will call the gallery and go see the sculpture. I can't for the life of me see anything 'offensive' about it.

Someone sounded the alarm bell and the Holier than thou are contacting the gallery.

The creative director of the gallery, Matt Semler, told the BBC that the organizers were considering all their options following a wave of complaints via email and telephone to the gallery.

Semler said: “We're obviously surprised by the overwhelming response and offense people have taken. We are certainly in the process of trying to figure out what we're going to do next.”

no trouble eating Him. Why should the fact that this time He his chocolate instead of a flavorless wafer or stale bread be offensive?

18. "the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organization"?
He claims about 300K members. It's probably actually well under that.

The Catholic church actually has about 30 million in the country alone.

You don't speak for them, you ignorant, pathetic whore.

It's time the media referred to this as the right-wing extremist organization that it really is; but for some reason, they never do.

28. Chocoloate Jesus
Don't go to church on Sunday
Don't get on my knees to pray
Don't memorize the books of the Bible
I got my own special way
Bit I know Jesus loves me
Maybe just a little bit more

I fall on my knees every Sunday
At Zerelda Lee's candy store

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

Well I don't want no Anna Zabba
Don't want no Almond Joy
There ain't nothing better
Suitable for this boy
Well it's the only thing
That can pick me up
Better than a cup of gold
See only a chocolate Jesus
Can satisfy my soul

(Solo)
When the weather gets rough
And it's whiskey in the shade
It's best to wrap your savior
Up in cellophane
He flows like the big muddy
But that's ok
Pour him over ice cream
For a nice parfait

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

However it's not the merits of the speech that protect it.

Pissed (Pun intended) everyone off more I think. A beautiful piece really, showing a cruicified Jesus in a container of urine, with a shaft of light in just the right place. If I recall, the artist liked to use body fluids in his art.
