*Royal Canin* pet food - DEADLY doses of Vitamin D - lawsuit
Suit claims pet food maker Royal Canin with deadly amount of Vitamin D

TORONTO (CP) - A Canadian class action lawsuit has been filed against pet food maker Royal Canin Canada Co. on behalf of dog and cat owners claiming that certain products contain excessive amounts of vitamin D and have caused their pets to become sick or die. One of the lawyers handling the plaintiffs' case said the suit against Royal Canin has been in the works for months and is unrelated to the high-profile problems that have come to light at Menu Foods Income Fund (TSX:MEW.UN), a major North American pet food maker that announced last week it was recalling dozens of brands of "cuts and gravy" style products.

...

The suit against Royal Canin, filed Tuesday in the Ontario Superior Court, alleges the pet food maker - a subsidiary of a French company - either knew or should have known the levels of vitamin D were unsafe and could cause the animals to develop high levels of calcium in their blood, renal failure and other conditions.

...

The Canadian lawsuit is seeking compensation for people who bought Royal Canin dog or cat food since Aug. 1, 2004.

...

The claim outlines at least 59 Royal Canin products that it says should be included in the refund.

1. Shit. My Leo is on Royal Canin Urinary SO for the crystals in his urine
Did they stop using high doses of Vitamin D? I started feeding him that food in December 06.

4. Isn't the Menu Foods recall just for the canned food?

3. I haven't been able to determine which products are included in the recall
I think it only applies to products that only the vet can prescribe.

5. my dog eats prescription Royal Canine Urinary SO. I did some research:
<snip>
Royal Canin first recalled their Canine Urinary SO canned diet on Feb. 2 by sending a letter directly to the veterinarians that sold the diet. In the letter, they stated that they started "an exhaustive nutrient analysis" of their canned products and reported that only the Canine Urinary SO cans marked "best before 03/2007, 05/2007, and 06/2007 were affected. More than a month later, a second letter was sent out that added the five following diets to the recall list: Royal Canin Veterinary Diet, Canine Low Fat canned, best before 6/2007; RCVD Canine Calorie Control canned, best before 4/2007 and best before 7/2007; RCVD Feline Sensitivity VR canned, best before 5/2007; RCVD Feline Calorie Control canned, best before 4/2007; and RVCD Feline LP pouch diet, best before 06/2007. I contacted a Dr. Bumitrescu at Royal Canin, who told me that the excess vitamin D came from a "premix" of additives that Royal Canin purchased from an outside supplier, and that the company had since stopped doing business with that supplier and had started checking the vitamin D levels in their final products.

I am feeding Leo the dry kibbles and couldn't find anything about them. He just had some blood and urine tests 2 weeks ago and they turned out fine.

10. The article does not name the source.
...the excess vitamin D came from a "premix" of additives that Royal Canin purchased from an outside supplier, and that the company had since stopped doing business with that supplier and had started checking the vitamin D levels in their final products...

I'm wondering if the additives were purchased from a country with no standards, like the wheat gluten.

9. Jesus! My terrier, Sara, was prescribed that brand by the vet...
But I never did give it to her because the prescription was for dry and I knew that she wouldn't eat it...;( This just gets worse and worse...;(

I just took chicken out of the freezer to thaw, am going to make chicken and rice for my little guys until this is resolved...:scared:
