SPRINGFIELD — If his Thursday indictment was bad news for Rod Blagojevich, Friday didn’t ease the pain.
That’s because the Illinois House overwhelmingly approved a bill that would prohibit the impeached ex-governor from fully cashing in on his newly inked book deal.
Frequent Blagojevich critic Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock) sponsored the bill, saying it addressed the “nightmare of citizens of Illinois have gone through.”
“We have to end the cycle of corruption,” Franks said. “We have to make sure people get into government service for the right reasons and not their own selfish purposes.”
If Blagojevich comes out of the 19-count indictment clean, he would be able to keep any profits. However, if he is found guilty, he would not be able to cash-in after conviction.
Blagojevich could even forfeit the six-figure advance he received from Phoenix Books if Attorney General Lisa Madigan pursues to recover that money after a conviction.
