James Dobson: Thompson must express faith
From Mary Snow
CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As senator turned actor Fred Thompson considers a presidential run, his Christian credentials are being questioned by Dr. James Dobson, a major voice among Christian conservative voters.

Republican strategist Rich Galen saw this as a positive thing.

"If I'm advising Fred Thompson, which I'm not, I'd say 'Good news! We're big enough that someone like Dobson has to pay attention to us,' " he said.

<snip>

Dobson has not endorsed any candidates. He told "U.S. News & World Report" that he thinks Gingrich is the "brightest guy out there" and "the most articulate politician on the scene today."

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/29/dobson.thompson/index.html

Dobson likes Gingrich because newt admitted to him that he had an affair at the same time he was persecuting B. Clinton for doing the same. It seems that being a hypocrite is okay as long as you admit to it seven years later and when you are afraid it will be found out anyway.

4. dobson is a degenerate
funny how he always expects Republican candidates to yap about religion in public, even if they are engaged in the most immoral, degenerate personal behavior at the same time. Haven't read the Bible for years, but didn't Jesus warn against those who parade religious belief in public, but are perverts? Something about true Christians are the ones who pray in their closet, I think.

5. When Christians pray...
they are talking personally to God. Why would you want to include strangers around you in your most intimate conversation with the supreme being? Maybe because some Christains are so insecure that want to let others around them know how pious they are.:dem:

In modern terms, It is better to lead by example than to brag about the good you do. If you live a life that is beneficial to others, it will be noted and others will want to be like you. But if you brag about what you do, you have undone all your good because you bring shame on those you help and resentment on you. Also if you stand on the street corner and scream at each passerby, they will probably hurry to get away from you, but if you speak good about others people will be draw to you.

Also, if you pray to god, he will listen, if you pray to god so that others will hear and be impressed, no one listens.

How a country preacher might explain it. ;-)

14. Jesus led by example an prayed to God privately.
He was overheard praying privately in the garden of Gethsemane. Of course he prayed for the sick and poor and he did it in their presence but not to prove anything to the groupies around him. He wanted results.:dem:

6. I would love it if he would say...
... "I am secure enough in my faith as a Christian that I do not feel the need to bow down and kiss James Dobson's ring. I only answer to God."

That's all it would take. If he and another candidate like Rudy would say that in public King Dobson's strangle hold would be broken.

Of course, that would mean Republicans would have to actually grow a pair, and bravery is not something Repukes are known for.

Dobson's hypocritical soul will be littering hell where it belongs. The man's a total hypocrite. I grew up in a Christian environment and while I don't buy a lick of it, the god they believe in, and certainly Jesus Christ, would be repulsed by Dobson.

16. From the sermon on the mount
Edited on Thu Mar-29-07 09:42 PM by junofeb

I am not a christian, but in choosing my path, I have paid attention. I have been reading the sermon on the mount a lot lately. This is who Jesus is for me. I don't know where the people who identify with the Christian brand get their version:

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites
are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the
corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say
unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and
when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret;
and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.:

on edit I add:

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his
brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:

17. Yes that is who he is for me also.
I was awkwardly trying to paraphrase his words somewhat in my one earlier post. The way I thought the country preachers I grew up with, one being my father, would have explained it. Some of the so called Christians of today have no idea of who Jesus was and why the religion they are involved in is supposedly based on his teachings.

18. Any Christian
should not need the approval of James Twit Dobson to reinforce or validate their belief system. Who died and made Dobson standard bearer of the faithful?

McCain was right the first time around when he called these bigots out. Now he can't pander or backtrack fast enough. I would love to see one Repug candidate refuse to grovel to the likes of Dobson. Fat chance. Am waiting to see how Thompson handles this.

43. there are a lot of people who would say Thompson's views make him not a "true" christian
mainly his selfish and antiquated conservative views.

I find it interesting that a community that often accuses RWers of not being "true Christians" is now saying that anyone who professes to believe in Christ as savior is by definition a Christian. I've said that exact same thing about Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and even Fred fucking Phelps and have been flamed for it.

I think that a lot of people pronouncing Thompson's piety now will be dismissing him as "not a true Christian" in the near future, if he is the nominee...

48. We need to think beyond the scope of political tribalism
James Dobson's actions are a symbol of how dangerous the social conservative movement in the country is. They have basically hijacked the Republican Party, gradually converting what used to be in the 1950s and maybe 1960s a viable opposition, center-right party into the shithole it is today.

The problem is that as long as they manage to silence the true conservative, rational voices and promote the religious neo-cons they have been getting into the WH since 1980, we will always be in risk of having a president that will take us down the road we are going today.

49. One: I have no interst in a so-called "true conservative". Two:
such "true conservatives" would take us down a very similar road to the evangelicals.

You have to understand, there is no such thing as a "true conservative", and even if there was, you wouldn't want them in power. Handouts to the rich and corporations, national sales tax to replace income tax, end of social programs, privitization of everything...

I don't know if CBS still runs his little family advice minute at the end of The Early Show, but it almost always makes me angry.

Dobson first came to my attention on a parenting message board in the 90s. I've built up a lot of vitriol aimed at him in the meantime. He and his batshit-crazy compatriot Don Wildmon.
