Fucking asswipe Jim Douglas says he'll veto marriage equality.
Governor Will Veto Gay Marriage Bill

Posted: March 25, 2009 01:00 PM EDT

Montpelier, Vermont - March 25, 2009

Gov. Jim Douglas, R-Vermont, says he will veto the same-sex marriage bill. He made the public announcement this afternoon.

The Vt. Senate gave its final stamp of approval Tuesday to a bill that would allow same-sex couples to marry in Vermont. Passage came on a voice vote with no debate, one day after the Senate gave the bill preliminary approval on a 26-4 roll call vote. Now the issue moves to the House, where the Judiciary Committee has scheduled a week's worth of testimony on the issue. It is expected to pass.

Governor Douglas has said that he opposes the bill, and this afternoon he announced he plans to veto it. He said he made the announcement to stop speculation and to focus attention on economy.

3. yes, but the legislature has been notoriously weak in overriding the
asswipes vetos, and though the Senate vote 26-4 for marriage equality, the House outcome is likely to be somewhat less lopsided. I doubt they'll get the two thirds majority they need.

2. I would say there is a good chance his veto could be overridden.

What are the procedural requirements for that in Vermont? Given the numbers in the Senate that voted for marriage equality, one would think there is a good chance that a veto could be overriden.

4. I only wish that were true. While it's a possibility
I just don't see 2/3 of the House voting to override.

6. I've never figured out why Vermont, the bluest state in the nation,
managed to elect and re-elect a Republican governor.

7. douglas shows up at every freakin' ribbon cutting and local event
and yeah, it's stupid but person to person politics works. And he got elected in part because Doug Racine is, if possible, even blander and more boring than Douglas and because no one has run a half way decent campaign against him.

8. Thats what happens when states are allowed to decide on an issue,
the federal government should be leading on.

9. Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner
State by state is never going to settle the issue. Federal courts are also the wrong venue. We need national legislation. It was not done with abortion and look where it got us...
